Hello Friends!

Bela, Taison, Yaseen, Charles, Cailie, Sufian, Justin, and Jayden V have now joined the “I Did It!” group by finishing up Chapter 1 Soar to Success.  Sophia, James, Jaden O, and Alisha are on their way to also joining this group. Keep going!  I know you can do it!

I have posted assignments to help us master Chapter 2 Numbers to 1,000.  This next chapter is foundational to understanding place value relationships.  There are lessons with Curious George and games to practice these skills. I have also posted the next set of Soar to Success assignments for you to get started on.

I am certain you are all very busy with vacation activities. I hope you are having a wonderful time!  However, I am also certain that there are some moments of wondering what there is to do.  I am here to encourage you to log on to thinkcentral.com and finish up your Soar to Success assignments for Chapter 1.  (Your user ID is your student #. PW: school).  Congratulations to Isabella A., Samantha, Aidan, Oscar, Karisse, and Zoe for successfully completing all math assignments.

I will soon be assigning Chapter 2 activities, so the rest of you need to get ready. 😀

Yesterday I sent home information about a “Book Bag” project.  Look for a blue paper in the homework folder or backpack. Students are to read one chapter book  and decorate a bag to go with the theme of that book.  Students are to create 3 items to put in the bag.  A list of suggestions is on the blue paper.  (Character puppet, write a letter to a character, write a new adventure for the character, etc).  Other ideas are welcome, just let me know what it is.  The project is due on Sept. 20th.

We have finished our lessons in chapter 1.  So, on to the test tomorrow!  Students took home a practice test for homework tonight.  Be a great detective and find all the clue words to help you solve the problems.

Please return all library books to school on Wednesday. Miss June, our librarian, needs to have them returned before we go off-track.  Thanks!

It seems trivial, but our pencils need sharpening. I would like to be able to send a bundle of dull pencils home with a student and have them returned with sharp leads that are ready to handle our workload.  Let me know if you have an electric sharpener and a few minutes to spare. I can send a bundle home tomorrow.  Thanks for helping us stay “sharp!”

We have been reading a humorous story called, “Ant and the Three Little Figs”.  It has certainly made us laugh as the pigs were changed to figs and the wolf was changed to a lemon.  But what exactly is a fig?  Thanks to Alisha, we now know.  Alisha has a fig tree in her yard and brought some fruit to share.  We made observations with our five senses and nearly all of us decided that figs are quite tasty.  So you may have some new requests during your next trip to the grocery store.

You may have noticed a list of vocabulary words on the homework assignment page and wondered what to do with them.  I have listed those words so you are aware of words we cover in detail in class. To truly learn new words, students need many, many opportunities to use the words. So please review those words at home and help your student become more familiar with them.  Using each word in a sentence (verbally) or being able to give a synonym or show an example would be a simple way to practice them.

Several parents have had the same question so here is the quickest way to give an answer.

Your child will not need to print anything from the online homework.  I can monitor their progress from my teacher account. Working online with math and spelling  for 10 minutes or so daily will give them a good amount of practice with the skills we are learning in class. The assignments I have set up are geared to keep students busy through all of Chapter 1.  Don’t be concerned about finishing everything. If you have clicked “Done” and want to revisit those assignments, just look in the “Old Assignments” folder and keep working from there. As a bonus, my students will be getting some valuable keyboarding practice. 😀
