The Case of the Mysterious Focus Blur

Watching our movies, I noticed a slight change of focus before my students would say their lines. Why is that? Was it a camera problem or something with editing software?

No. It has to do with the slate the director’s assistant uses before each shot. It’s held really close to the camera. The close the slate to mark the scene and take and move it away from the camera before “the action” takes place. It’s at that moment the camera has to refocus from something near the lens to something further away.

We’ll have to fix that in future productions.
