Rather than give each chapter its own title, Wilson Rawls has numbered the chapters of Where the Red Fern Grows.

  1. Create a fitting title for either chapter 1 or chapter 2.
  2. Next, determine the central idea (one-sentence summary) of the chapter you chose.
  3. Finally, give three key details from the text that support the central idea.

Your response should be titled and in paragraph form.

  1. Chapter 2 : Billy starts the tale of his boyhood days. He explains that when he was ten years old, he wanted two coon hounds. His Papa and Mama say that he can’t have them because they are too expensive. They offer to get Billy a collie from Old Man Hatfield but Billy is not happy with this suggestion; he will only be happy if he gets coon hounds. Billy is very upset with his parents’ refusal to buy him the dogs. He lives in the Ozarks, one of the best hunting places in the world and he doesn’t even have a dog to hunt with.

  2. Where the red Fern Grows (Chapter 6)

    The Puppy Dieses

I believe “the puppy disease” would be a good title for chapter 1 because it talks about a guy who finds a dog and then talks about a story that states his past and starts to talk about how he had the puppy dieses when he was little as well, which is why I think that is a fantastic title.
    • First of all, the boy says he wants two hound pups for hunting and that he had been crying for day and even weeks just to get at least one hound.
    • Second, I also think that the boy left the gate open is because he truly thought that the dog might come back that night, which is a sign that he loved dogs and once wanted or either had a dog in his lifetime.
    • Third, even though his parents told him that he was to young to have hound dogs or that they cost a lot of money he still cried and wouldn’t stop which also proves that he really wanted and liked hound dog.
That is why I think that the boy really wants a dog and that this title for chapter 1 should be “the puppy disease” and all details explain why.

  3. Red Hound Puppy Fever!
Billy is a man that remembers his childhood and how he really wants two red hound puppies, but his parents said no because they were poor. Billy wanted puppies so bad that he would starve. He also cried a lot. He would not even talk.
