Where the Red Fern Grows Response

Answer one of the following.  Be sure to include a topic sentence (claim), examples/evidence from the text, and provide reasoning by relating to your own experiences.

  1. At the end of chapter 8, humor is used to illustrate Billy’s mixed feelings toward his sisters.  How does he imply that he loves them, but can’t really show it or admit it? How does he express his annoyance at them? Is this common in relationships with siblings?
  2. Billy says, “After Papa left, things were a little different.  The tree didn’t look as big, and the ax wasn’t as heavy.” What does this say about the way our feelings and emotions can change our perspective about things, even our physical sensations? Relate this to an experience of your own. (pg. 81)

    Question 2
This probably means that after we have a inspirational talk, we believe we can get the job done. This happened to me once, when I was looking for my shirt. I thought it was impossible to find. Then Akira told me to calm down and think about where I had it last. After we talked I was really confident that I could find it, I thought and thought about where I was last with my shirt. Finally I remembered where I had it last, under my bed! The talk with Akira, before I found my shirt, was very inspirational. It encouraged me to find my shirt.

  2. Where the Red Fern Grows
    Question 2
The reason why the ax got lighter was because the sycamores tree that Billy was trying to chop down, which got him stronger. The way he got stronger was when Billy was swinging the ax. So then Billy got tired and sore so Billy fell asleep. The way how the trees got smaller was because Billy got taller over the time.

  3. When Billy told his family he was about to cut the big sycamore tree where the coon was,his mom and sisters were arguing with him.His sisters were very sad that Billy was going to cut a giant tree. They were making fun of him which got Billy really mad.He was about to hit his sister but she ran into some bushes.I always have this in common with my sister, she always bugs me and I always get mad.I do not hit her though.

  4. Billy has mixed feelings about his sisters, but deep down, he loves them. To support this claim, in the text, Billy says, “When my sister came with the lunch bucket, I could’ve kissed her, but I didn’t.” This implies that he does love them, but he does not want to express his feelings. Billy also gets quite annoyed with his sisters at times. As seen in the text, at the end of Chapter 8, when his sister calls him crazy for attempting to cut the big sycamore tree down. I can relate to this, as I love my sisters, but some times, I can get annoyed with them. In relationships with siblings, I think this is very, very common, because I feel like that’s how siblings should get along. All in all, Billy seems to be annoyed with his sisters, but deep down, he loves them.

  5. Chapter 8

In the last page of Where The Red Fern Grows Billy and her sister are outside and Billy tries to cut the tree down. His sister doesn’t believe he can do it because the tree was huge. He says “ it will take me a month to cut it down”. Billy kept swinging and her sister kept looking at her. Billy said “ if you don’t get out of here I will hit you with the stick”. But each time he kept swinging and her sister kept looking at him.

  6. Chapter 8
    Where the Red Fern Grows

He demonstrates his love for his sisters by asking himself should he kiss her of her could have not. And his sisters took him an eye on him so he will not be crazy. She believed he was crazy.

He also does not listen to them sometimes. He does not like them much. This can happen to a few brothers with siblings.

Across the river and from far back in the rugged mountains I heard the baying of a hound . I heard from my window on those nights so long before.

  7. Billy was courageous and had determination. After Billy’s papa left he got extra energy because his father had confidence in him.He was even able to sing a little while he chopping the tree.

Billy shows his his feelings by not saying bye and admitting that he loves his sisters. She tells him that he is crazy because his eyes are turning green. Billy does not really care about what his sister is telling him. His sister leaves and while she is leaving he throws a stick at here and yells at here to leave but does not really want to hit here. This happens to me with my little cousin. She comes into my room and makes a mess and i end up kicking her but not that hard.

  9. W.T.R.F.G

Billy’s shows his mixed feeling toward his sisters by calmly telling her that’s she’s crazy. Billy implied that he loves his sisters because Billy said would have kissed her but, he didn’t because she had big eyes like a guinea’s eyes. This is common in relationships with my siblings.I’m sometimes mad at them but, I still love them.

  10. Billy expressed his love in two ways. One way is that he lets his sad sisters play with his dogs. Also he gives a hug for helping him catch the coon.

  11. W.T.R.F.G

Billy expresses his feelings to his sisters by being mean to them. He is mean to them when he picks up a stick about to throw it at his oldest sister. He really wouldn’t throw it at her. He expresses his annoyance by yelling at her. She will not stop saying he’s crazy. It is very common in relationships with siblings. Even I do that with my sisters. We just hit each other and call each other names. But in the end we still love each other.

    Question 2
Once when I was in third grade when I would get up and wash my face I would always have to open the cabinets and stand on the inside of the cabinets to reach the sink because I was to short. Then, in fourth grade we had a coffee table and when my brother and I have to carry it to the carpet. He would be carrying the table five inches up in the air and I will go barely a centimeter up. Now in the sixth grade I can open the water to the sink to wash my face. I can carry the coffee table at least one and a half inches up in the air and it is not as heavy two years ago. In Billy’s situation he grew taller and stronger than the first time he went hunting with Old Dan and Little Ann. Those are the ways Billy and I changed over time.

  13. Billy’s emotions changed after Papa left and our feelings can change if we look at things a different way. One day my family and I were moving to another home. We needed to put our boxes in a truck and when we got to our new home we needed to unload our boxes which felt like forever. Then we needed to go back home because not all of our boxes can fit in the truck, so we needed to go back and get them. When we put all the leftover boxes in the truck we drove back to our new home. When we finished unloading the leftover boxes my family and I were unpacking, but I did not feel like it because I was really tired. I was just laying on the floor and for some reason I was looking at things a different way and I was not tired anymore. I believe that if you look at things a different way then you can accomplish anything and since Billy looked at things a different way he was more confident and his ax was not as heavy as it was and the tree did not look as big as it was.

  14. Where The Red Fern Grows (Response #2)

Why the tree looked smaller to Billy and why the ax didn’t feel as heavy is because he was proud that his dad had gave him the responsibility to cut down the big tree.
That also happened to me. My dad usually feeds my pests and one day my dad let me feed my pet chickens myself which was awesome.

  15. The Great Country of Italy

Italy’s flag was adopted on January 7, 1948.
The first people to use the colors that are now on the Italian flag, was the Cispadane Republic in 1707.
The flag means tricolor. It has green, white, and red.

The green represents the country’s plains and the hills, the white represents the snow capped Alps, and the red represents the blood spilt in the wars of Italian Independence. But in more religious eyes the green means hope, the white means faith, and the red means charity.

Italy has a lot of amazing sights and sounds and I hope I get a chance to visit Italy one day.

  16. Where the Red Fern Grows Response

Billy used humor to illustrate his mixed feelings toward his sister by making her think that he was going to cut it down for a long time. He tried to show her he loves her but she went crazy about the tree. She tried to prove that he was crazy by saying that he was scaring mama. From my experience I think that some siblings are like that to where they are scared to show that they love them. Because Billy’s sister went on and on about him cutting the tree, he couldn’t show that he loves her.

  17. W.T.R.F.G

Billy shows love for his sisters in two ways. The first way he shows love for his sisters is he lets his sisters play with his pups. The second way he shows love for his sisters is he hugs them when they help him catch the coons.

  18. Where the red fern grows
Billy was chopping down the big tree because his dogs found a coon in the tree. Billy could not let his dogs down so he started to chop the tree. While he was chopping he knew he could not chop it that easy because it was a big tree. He also knew it would take him a long time to take the tree down. He kept chopping while little Ann licked off his sweat and old Dan kept track of his work. His dad came to check on him. His dad told him to stop and look for a coon some other place. He did not listen to him and still tried to get the tree to the ground. He got his lunch from his sister. He gave the dog food to the the dogs and went to the spring to get cool water. The food gave him strength again. Little Ann dug a little hole to sleep in. She acted like she was sleeping. Every time he raised his ax and she rose her head looked at him.
