Dividing Decimals

Need a little extra help with dividing decimals? What do you think of these videos by Smith Math Academy and Khan Academy? In what ways is each video helpful?  Which video do you think is better? Why? Are there any changes you think I (your teacher) would make to the videos if given the chance??

  1. I believe that the second video is better because the man that talks in the second video explains better than the man in the first video. The guy in the second video also checks his work when he is done with a problem. The man in the first video just goes to the next problem and doesn’t check his work,he might get it wrong. Every video is helpful because they each try to tell us where to move the decimal point when the divisor is too small you can just make it bigger and you can divide easier.I don’t believe there should be any changes.

  2. I liked both videos and I think both are helpful. The Smith Math Academy video was more helpful in providing more info on moving the decimal to where the decimal becomes a whole number, while the Khan Academy video was more helpful on providing more info on actually doing the problems. I personally think that the Khan Academy video was better than the Smith Academy video because it showed more of actually doing the problems, where as the Smith Academy video spent most of the video talking about how to do the problems, and then, at the last second, did only 4 problems. Some things I think Ms. Adams would critique about is that in the Smith Academy video, the person who was teaching had work that was not neat, and it was hard to understand. Also, progression in the video was very sluggish at times. Some things that I think that Ms. Adams would critique about the Khan Academy video is that like the Smith Academy video, the person who was teaching had bad handwriting and not neat work. Another thing that Ms. Adams would probably would not think was good is that the person doing the video tended to guess a lot when he was dividing, such as multiplying something that he thought would fit in, but was a bad guess. Some language changes that the SMA video could use is that the words he was using were very plain and didn’t have good vocabulary. However, it was the opposite with the Khan Academy video. The man talking had very sophisticated vocabulary, and at times, I couldn’t understand him. All in all, the videos I watched were great, but could use some improvements.

  3. I think that both of the videos are pretty good. The reason why I thought the videos are good because they both have their own ways of doing a problem.I think that the first video was better because he was more neat and had a better way of teaching us how to move the decimal over and to put a decimal on top.

  4. These videos are very educational. In the Smith Math Academy video it shows me how to move the decimals. Then the Khan Academy video shows me how to make the problem into a four level division problem. I believe the better one is the Khan Academy is the better one, because the video shows me something I didn’t know. I think you would change that when the guy shows that when you change the 5 into 50 and then 500, then he should show what he multiplied the number by.

  5. The videos were very educational and I really liked them but I couldn’t quite find the mistakes that were made but I really think that it was awesome sauce and I will be waiting for more videos such as this one. It is good because it gives you a lot of examples. I think the Khan video is better because it is appropriately longer and more educated.

  6. I think both of the videos were very helpful to me but I think Khan Academy’s videos were more helpful than Smith Math Academy’s videos. The video that is the most helpful was the first video because I learned some new things. I think the videos are fine and don’t need any changes.
