What a beautiful day to enjoy our FREE trip to the Farmers’ Market! The students enjoyed learning about new fruits and vegetables, and enjoyed buying some of their favorites too! Huge thanks to our fabulous chaperones – Ms. Salazar, Mrs. Orellana, Mr. Ulrich, Mrs. Kumar, Mrs. Baker, Mr. Narayan, Mrs. Ofoma, Mr. Sagar, Mr. Malone, and Mr. and Mrs. Li. Without these wonderful parents, this trip would not have been such a great success. Thank you, thank you!
Feast for Friends
Posted onWow! Thank you for all the contributions that made our feast for friends so plentiful! We had a variety of fruits and vegetables to balance out the yummy treats. We even had homemade Mac and Cheese Casserole, Meatpie, and chocolate covered strawberries! Almost everyone brought something to share. Thanks for helping to make this a fun day!
Iready Pass Off
Posted onHave you heard about our latest schoolwide contest? I spoke with many of you at conferences about your child’s reading and math levels based on their individual assessment on the iready computer program. I encouraged many of you to have your child play nightly. Remember, if you do not have computer access, visit the library or a family member who does. Here is the info…
The Great i-ready PASS OFF has been extended to Wednesday, February 11. There will be an extra recess for all students who have already met the criteria. At the end of the contest, there will be a special recognition and reward. The top winner will receive a Kindle!
K, 1, 2 – Pass 5 lessons in math and 5 lessons in reading.
3,4,5,6 – Pass 10 lessons in math and 10 lessons in reading.
Good Luck!
The students who have met this goal SO FAR and will earn an extra recess are
Elden
Jesse
Ayoush
Congrats! Let’s get some more kiddos on this list! Remember, it’s not just lessons completed, but lessons PASSED!!
AR Points
Posted onWe started the Accelerated Reader program and students have had about 2 months to read and test on books within their level. If they tested on a library book a week they should have close to 8 points at a minimum. To kick off the New Year and motivate them to keep working this trimester, I worked with Mrs. Garcia to provide rewards to any students who reached the 5 point first goal.
Congratulations to Raquel, Owen, Clement and Yusuf!
Please check in with your child to make sure they are reading their weekly library book AND testing on it. Remember you have online parent access to the AR program so that you can continue to monitor your child’s progress. This is a part of their reading grade so I’ve already discussed with students the importance of keeping up with their points. Thanks for your help with this!
Math Homework and Extra Practice
Posted onFor the students who did not attend school today, please remember you are still accountable for the hw. You can print out the math assignment from home by going to Think Central under My Library. The Standards Practice Book has the hw page needed. Also, if you are looking for extra practice you can find Ch 10 skills under the animated math models. This has some instruction, practice, and a mini assessment which makes a great 10 minute review. There are also fun games under Mega Math. All you need to log in is your student ID and the password is school. Let’s take our test tomorrow so we don’t forget everything over our fabulous holiday break! 🙂
Emergencies and Text Reminders
Posted onIn light of our impending weather concerns and for fast communication during any emergency, I once again invite everyone to sign up for my text reminders. In a situation where telephones and computers are down, I can use my personal cell phone to send updates regarding your child. I currently have 4 subscribers, and I’m hoping more of you will take advantage of this great resource. Of course standard rates apply. To sign up, simply text @yanez4 to the number 81010. No replies are allowed so you will not receive additional texts from other parents. Can’t wait to endure the storm with my students tomorrow. School is indeed in session.
New this Trimester
Posted onWelcome to Trimester 2!
Now that the students have adjusted to life in 4th grade, I have some new skills for them to practice.
Reading Log – In Trimester 1 the students did their nightly reading for 20 minutes. This trimester, they will be accountable for documenting their reading with writing through a nightly reading log. You will see the first one come home tonight. This WILL be part of their ELA grade.
3 Subject Notebook – We are working on multiple skills and this supply is needed. Please plan to provide one for your child as soon as possible. If this is a hardship, please email me asap and I will purchase one on their behalf with my own funds.
Looking forward to an educational and fun trimester 2! 🙂
FREE Helmets!
Posted onToday your child is coming home with a FREE helmet thanks to a partnership with UC Davis and Kohl’s Cares. Students from the CSUS nursing program came to our class to present the importance of helmet safety. They individually fit your child for a proper helmet and they will be coming home with it today! 🙂 Please encourage your child to wear a helmet EVERY time they are riding a bike, skateboarding, riding a scooter, or any other activity that might require them to protect their brain.
Math Homework
Posted onThank you parents for all the questions and comments on hw papers and via email. It seems that you are not alone! MANY parents had questions regarding last night’s math homework. That is probably because it is not the way you learned how to do multiplication. Welcome to GoMath! 🙂 I spent time reteaching it to the students today and they will be coming home with an example on their homework paper. See number 1. The HOT problems were the toughest because it required you to think about the process backwords. We also reviewed this today and students seemed more confident. I am sending home another night of the same skill in hopes that everyone can master it with a little more practice. Good luck!
Red Ribbon Week
Posted onThis week is Red Ribbon Week which means we have been doing lots of activities and having great discussions about leading substance free lives. Please use this opportunity to have your own discussions at home with your children. Start by asking them what we’ve done in class and take that as an opportunity to add your own thoughts, stories, expectations, etc.. Good luck with a good talk! 🙂
