Before we went off track in December, I sent home directions for the CA Relief map project stating that it would be due in March. Because the students are so immersed in their Science Fair Projects, and because I don’t want to overwhelm the sub, I have decided to postpone the due date to late May. I will redistribute the directions when I return in early May and students will have the month to work on it. Of course you can always get it done earlier, but feel free to also take your time. Hope this helps relieve some stress.

AR Update
Posted onWe are continuing our accelerated reader program in class. Students earn points based on the books that they read each week, as well as their comprehension score. Congratulations to the following students for earning the first round of prizes…
5 point level
Martin, Nikkia, Maricela, Moises, Amir, Kayla, and Katelyn
10, 15, and 25 level
Moises
Please make sure your child is reading at least 20 minutes a night, and also check in with them to find out their last AR score. Remember, these are a part of their ELA grade and will be noted in their progress reports also. If a student is not reading and testing they will receive a 0. Thanks for encouraging literacy at home!
Classroom Donations
Posted onThanks to Alyssa for contributing a box of tissue to our classroom. We just ran out of our supply so we welcome any other donations. We are also looking for any scraps or materials you may have (buttons, fabric, ribbon, etc.). We will be doing an art project in the upcoming weeks that requires the use of these art materials. Thank you in advance for your generosity!
See’s Candy Pick-up
Posted onFor those who sold See’s Candy…it will be available for pick-up on Tuesday, February 7 from 2:30 – 5:30 in the school library. Please make arrangements to pick up your candy that day as it is the only day available for pick-up. Thanks so much for contributing to our school fundraiser!
Valentine’s Day
Posted onThe following letter will be sent home this week. You may choose to reply on this post, or send back the hard copy form. I have placed a class list at the top of the blog page so that students can begin filling out their Valentine cards.
Feast for Friends
February 14, 2012
In honor of Valentine’s Day we are having a Feast for Friends in which the students will be allowed to share cards and any treats they would like to bring. Please know this is optional. They may also just enjoy being in the presence of their friends and receiving. If your child does not celebrate this holiday, please let me know and I can have an alternate placement and assignment planned. In order to prevent a sugar overload, please sign up below if you are planning to send a treat to contribute to our feast. I would like to make sure there is a balance of healthy and fun food. 🙂 Please try to stay within our theme of white, pink and red. For example, white chocolate covered strawberries, red cherry tomatoes, or pink dipped pretzel sticks. You will receive confirmation the same or next day so you have time to bake or buy. We also welcome parents in the classroom. If you would like to come in and help for the afternoon feast (1:05 – 2:30), please let me know below. If you are not donating food or time, you do not need to return the bottom portion. Thanks, Ms. Yanez

Maternity Leave for Ms. Yanez
Posted onHello families! I am nearing the end of my pregnancy and am making plans for my maternity leave absence. My last day teaching will be Tuesday, February 21st. My approximate return date is May 1st. I have been searching for the perfect replacement, and I am happy to announce that Ms. Llanos (Lee-awn-os) will be my long-term sub. Leaving my students is extremely difficult, but I know they will be in good hands with her. I look forward to finishing the year with everyone when I return. Please feel free to touch base with me in the next few weeks if you have any questions or concerns.
Find Homework Here!
Posted onThanks to parent input, I have added a page where the daily homework can be found. At the top of the blog near contact info and Important Dates, you will find the HW page. I will post daily homework for the week as it is assigned. This feature is for parents and students who have early dismissals or are absent. Students will still be expected to write in their agenda daily. This is an important study skill they must have as an intermediate student and I do not want them to rely solely on the blog. This blog is a work in progress as it is my first attempt at creating one. I truly appreciate parent feedback on how I can improve it and make it more useful for you. Thank you.
