TIME FOR KIDS’S first Spotlight on Service volunteer, Laura White, 17, is making a big splash in Atlanta, Georgia. Her organization, Wild and Water, teaches local kids how to swim. When Laura was 15, she volunteered to go on a camping trip with some of the area’s underprivileged children. During an outing to the lake, several campers who couldn’t swim ran into the water. Laura, a former competitive swimmer, helped five struggling kids to safety. “It was crazy,” she told TFK. Soon after, the teen started Wild and Water. In addition to receiving swimming lessons from the group’s volunteer instructors, kids are also taught how to be safe around water. So far, Wild and Water has worked with 115 kids in Atlanta. There are also plans to expand to other cities, including Savannah, Georgia, and New Orleans, Louisiana. Seeing the kids’ excitement and watching the program grow “is a feeling you can’t describe,” says Laura.
