Today we watched “Playing for Change, Stand By Me.” It was very powerful for us to see how music connected so many people around the world. We began to talk out how else the people of the world were connected, and realized that we probably have more in common than differences. Mrs. McKillop then asked us to think about how we have changed in the ways we are tolerant since we have begun exploring tolerance. As a class we came up with some ideas. The most important area we have changed in is that we are far more aware of different cultures, and how bullying can impact people. We talked about the videos we have watched and the vocabulary we have learned. We then tought how important it was to continue the changes we have begun. In conclusion, we think that the world is definitely becoming a smaller place, that we have more similarities than differences, and that small gestures of kindness can have a big impact. What do you think?
We watched “Playing for Change” this week also. After listening to the wonderful music, gazing at the beautiful colors and appreciating all the amazing words of peace, the mediators created “Upstander Cards”. These are inspirational quotes that came from experiencing the wonders of the video. We also wrote Upstander Cards after our visit with Jay and Monique, the Holocaust survivors. I am so proud of these terrific 8th graders and the awesome words they have written to share with your class. We focused on themes of tolerance, cooperation, upstand-ing, appreciation of self and others and reaching out to one another. My students will be posting some of their Upstander Card quotes this week for you to read. We hope you will find some that you really like and are meaningful to you. Next week we can discuss these messages during the videoconference if you wish. We are excited to hear from all of you about what you are learning and how you feel about bystanders and upstanders. pam
I’m a big music guy. I play the drums and I am always listening to music. I absolutely loved the stand by me. My favorite guy was the old man from New Orleans.
But it does give a really good message.
Sometimes you really do need someone to stand by you.
The upstander qoute that i came up with was:”Be yourself, what ever it may be, dont be the same as ohters around you!walk like a penguin”! I loved the movie because the person who created it was right, we could find some type of peace in all of us with music. I have always loved music and all of the variety. I listen to music almost all of the time and even though I dont know how to play an instrument I would love to learn.I also liked how he had people from everywhere sing and then put it together into one.
Fly like a bird
Roar like a lion
Run like a cheetah
You will be seen
You will be heard
You will be admired
Bravery comes in many forms
Wether you’re big or small
Short or tall
Stand up and speak out
-Dont be an octupusand just hide
Be a wave in the high tide.
-Each raindrop eventually lands,
what matters is where will
it land, on YOU or Others.
-Each key belongs in a hole
I was just wondering which one do you like the 1rst 2nd or 3rd?
Dont back in your shell
Stand up for others.

after we got back from our trip with the holocaust servivor there where a few thoughts that entered my mind. There was a quote that I made up that I thought explained our trip well! “You may be shy, but you have a big heart, let it shine!” another one that I did was “When the world is falling down stand up and you will be seen!” my last one that I did I liked the most…”Be a raindrop, because once you fall, a whole rainstorm will fallow you!” these are what i thought of after our trip! -katherine
I watched “playing for Change” and this is what i thought to write:
“stand up for what you beleive in, even if your the only one standing”.
Don’t fit in
With the Crowd
Stand out…
There was a fuzzy bear
who did not have a fear
to stand up in what he belives in
Taking chances in life
leads to a life of surprises
Don’t be afraid
to stand up
You can be stonger than the Bully
Don’t be the one pushing kids down
to see the frown
Be the one to stand up
and fight back
This are some qoutes that we made
tell me what you think!
-Jason

After watching Playing for Change, here is what I thought:
We all are part of different cultures, cultures that fight and disagree; but the songs in each of our hearts can still intertwine to create one beautiful melody.
Katherine, your quotes remind of one by Anne Frank: “Everyone has inside of him a piece of good news. The good news is that you don’t know how great you can be! How much you can love! What you can accomplish! And what your potential is!”
The momentom that I will do is that I am going to keep on writing for change next year and I am going to motivate alot of stuff
I love your movies I just hope you guys make movies next year.
