FENNEC FOX

FENNEC FOX

The Fennec Fox is the smallest of all the world’s foxes.  Their bodies are only 10 to 16 inches long and weigh 2 to 3 pounds. They are sometimes call “desert foxes” because they live in the deserts of North Africa.  They are nocturnal, or active at night, while they hide from the heat of the day in underground dens.

Fennec  foxes have large ears to radiate body heat and keep the animal cool.  They also have a wooly coat to keep them warm at night.  Their wide feet help them quickly dig dens underground.

These foxes live in small groups of up to 10 animals.  They are not picky eaters and eat plants, rodents, eggs, reptiles and insects.  They can go very long periods without water like many desert animals.

Predators that eat the fox include vultures, hyenas and jackals.  Fennecs can live 8-10 years.
