CROCODILES

CROCODILES

The Nile Crocodiles is Africa’s largest reptile.  They live in the rivers and marshes of Africa south of the Sahara desert. Crocs use their long, powerful tails to move through the water.

Crocodiles reach 16 to 20 feet long and can weigh up to 500 pounds.  Crocodiles are extremely good parents. After eggs are laid, the parents guard the nests carefully. They will even roll the eggs gently in their mouths to help the babies hatch. Young crocodiles then live under their mother’s protection for up to 2 years.

Crocodiles often bask on the land during the day and return to the rivers at night.  Their diet is mainly fish and turtles, but they will attack any animal that they find, usually ones that come to the water to drink. They will eat zebras, small hippos, birds and even other crocodiles. This makes crocodiles the only predators of crocodiles!

The average lifespan of the crocodile is 45 years.
