BATS
FRUIT BAT
Fruit bats are flying mammals that live in the dense forests of Africa. They are sometimes known as flying foxes. They live in huge groups called colonies. These colonies can have hundreds of thousands of animals. These bats are nocturnal (most active by night) and rest during the day by hanging upside down from their feet in caves and trees.
Fruit bats mostly eat fruit juice and flower nectar. Some of their favorite fruits are figs, mangoes, and dates. They use their sense of smell to find the fruit, then bite through the skin with sharp teeth. They chew the fruit, then spit out the skin and seeds.
The African fruit bat is one of the largest bats. It can reach 16 inches in length with a wing span of up the 6 feet. They weigh up to 4 pounds.
Fruit bats can live up to 40 years.
