Casey News: December 12 – 21, 2016

Happy Friday 3rd Grade Families,

This month we are focusing on the character trait of Resilience. Students who are Resilient work to solve problems, challenge themselves, persevere, are patient, and work hard to do their personal best. Our Character of the Week this week for Resilience is Aeryn. Thank you Aeryn for being a student of character!

Events and Reminders:

  • Thank you Mrs. Hatfield will leading our class in another awesome Art Docent lesson!
  • Our class Christmas Party will be on Tuesday, December 20th 12:45-2:45. Thank you for your amazing support of our class!
  • Dinner Night Out is scheduled for Wednesday, December 14th 4:00–9:30 at Habit Burger in Rancho Cordova off Zinfandel. Families must bring the flyer or show a digital copy of the flyers and 20% of all proceeds will be donated to the Sunrise PFO.
  • In the spirit of giving, we will have a class book exchange. Please send in a new, wrapped book, by Friday, December 16th. Detailed information went home in the Wednesday folders. If you are unable to purchase a new book, please let me know and I will make sure to pick one up so all students can participate.
  • On Wednesday, December 21st, at our Character Awards Assembly, we will recognize students for being Resilient.
  • Wednesday, December 21 is Track Change Day and a minimum day. Students will be dismissed at 12:45.
  • Winter Break – December 22-January 2. Students return on Tuesday, January 3rd.
  • Kings Spirit Night tickets are selling fast. As a reminder the game is Sunday, January 15th (MLK weekend so no school Monday) at the new Golden 1 Center. Tickets are $45/each for upper level seats. Join the PFO for an evening of fun and checkout the new arena. There will be a chance for all families that purchase tickets to the event to have the opportunity for an on court fan experience. Participants for courtside warmups will be selected at random. Tickets can be purchased by completing and returning the order for that went home in Wednesday folders or through the Sunrise PFO website www.sunrisepfo.org. We anticipate selling out before the end of the year. We hope to see you there!

Fieldtrips:

We have a few fieldtrips planned in 2017. Please mark your calendar for these dates. More information will come home as we approach each trip:

  • February 14, 2017: SHAPE – EGUSD Food Processing Plant
  • February 21, 2017: Maidu Community Center
  • April 24, 2017: Sheldon High’s Advanced Theatre performance of Untitled Robin Hood Project

What are we learning in class?

  • In Math, we began Chapter 6: Understanding Division. Please visit our class blog for the vocabulary sheet.
  • In ELA, we will read a few Historical Fictions to explore why people immigrate to new places. Please visit our class blog for the informational sheet on our learning goals for this week and next. We’re also working on a variety of writing assignments with the goal of publishing our writing using the Chrome Books. Most writing will not be sent home throughout the year, it will be saved in our writing portfolios.
  • In Social Studies, we continue learning about Government. Students will learn about the 3 branches of the government, how they were formed, and the responsibilities and importance to our country.
  • In Science, we are beginning a chapter on Environment Change. We will explore how changes to environments affect living things. We will talk about pollution, reduce/reuse/recycle, and other vocabulary related to environmental change.
