Mobile Dairy Classroom

Today, I learned some interesting facts at the Mobile Dairy Classroom. There, I saw a Holstein. A Holstein is another name for a black and white cow. Her name was Sneakers. She had a calf at age two. Sneakers has a long tong which she can use for cleaning her nose and picking up Alfa Alfa Hay to eat.  All cows are considered an adult at age one. Because of these dairy cows, we have dairy product. They produce milk and from milk we can make a lot of dairy products like ice-cream, yogurt, cheese, whip cream and especially milk. The cow’s milk has calcium in it. We need calcium for our body because it makes our bones strong and healthy.  I learned that cows chew their food in the back of their mouth, side to side. They repeat the chewing process twice. A cow has one large stomach in it’s body. Their stomach has four chambers. Each chamber has a different job.  Cows use their tail to swat away bugs. If a bug lands on its back, stomach, or shoulder, it twitches. A female cow is called a cow. A male is a bull. A baby is called a calf. A female cow that has not given birth to a calf is called a heffer. Learning about cows was so fun and interesting!
