(Morning students should arrive at school between 8:10 and 8:20.)

PM Kindergarten Hours:  11:09 – 2:40 pm

(Afternoon students should arrive at school between 11:00 and 11:09.)

*** Kindergartners will enter and exit their classroom through the back door of their classroom (Kindergarten playground side). ***

  • Drop Off: You may drop off your child outside their classroom door each morning. Please stay with your child until the classroom teacher arrives to the kindergarten yard to supervise.
  • Pick Up: For morning kindergarten we ask that all parents stay behind the kindergarten playground gates. Once your child’s teacher has made eye contact with you, he/she will send your child out to you on the other side of the fence. Pick up procedures for afternoon kindergarten will be discussed in individual classrooms.  If your child is last in line, please be patient.  If it is raining outside please come to the classroom for both morning and afternoon pick up.

Parking:

For your child’s safety, please walk with your child to the kindergarten yard for drop off and pick up, please see attached map. * Please no double parking. * We will not dismiss students to parents waiting in cars. Please be courteous to your fellow neighbors and refrain from parking in front of driveways.

Attendance:

Regular school attendance is of vital importance for every student. If the absence is not excused, the school loses needed funds. Excused absences are for illnesses or medical appointments. When your child is going to be absent from school, please notify the school or your child’s teacher.

  • Sunrise phone number: 985-4350
  • Send a note stating reason for absence upon child’s return to school.
  • A verbal notification to the teacher is insufficient.

Tardies:

It is very important that your child arrive at school on time. We have to utilize every minute of our 3 hour and 30 minute day. If your child is late and the class has left the playground or classroom, please escort your child to the office to get a tardy slip.

It is equally important to pick up your child on time, as to avoid any tears. Students not picked up on time will be sent up to the office.

*** Please notify us in writing if someone different is picking up your child, as photo identification will be needed. This is to ensure that your child will get home safely. ****

Behavior Expectations:

Your child may be very tired for the first few weeks. The adjustments to school with its many rules and new people may cause some anxiety. Students need to learn to cooperate, wait their turn, and share the classroom materials. Most children adapt easily to their new environment.

General Classroom Rules:

  • Treat others the way you want to be treated.
  • Always do your best.
  • Be a quiet worker.
  • Be proud of yourself and all that you do!
  • Think safety.

Communication:

Report cards are sent home three times a year and conferences are scheduled as needed. If you feel the need for a conference, please don’t hesitate to call for an appointment.

Please limit parent/teacher conversation at drop-off time as it prevents our instruction from beginning. Teachers will be available for informal conferencing after school hours or at scheduled times.

Safety:

For your child’s safety, he/she should know and be able to tell:

  1. First and last name
  2. Home phone number/cell number
  3. Home street address.
  4. Parents’ names.

Volunteers:

This school year is an important one for your child. He/She will grow intellectually, emotionally, as well as physically. We ask that you take an active part in your child’s educational development this year by volunteering. Involving yourself in the Volunteer Program will benefit both you and your child because it reinforces the vital necessity of the home – school connection which is a strong link in your child’s education.

Enclosed you will find a Parent Volunteer Form on which you may indicate the areas in which you feel you can participate. Please complete the form and return it to your child’s teacher.

Training and direction will be provided for all parents who volunteer. No previous experience is necessary. Be sure to sign the visitors’ log in the school office before visiting the classroom.

**To ease in the adjustment period, we are asking for no parent volunteers in the classroom for the first two weeks of school. **

Money:

When sending money to school, please put the money in an envelope labeled with your child’s name and the purpose for sending the money. Cash only, please.

Clothing:

Please put your child’s initials on each article of outside clothing (sweaters, coats, and jackets). Also, please be sure to label the inside of your child’s backpack. Due to space limitations and classroom safety, please no rolling backpacks.

Please see specific school guidelines on clothing in the Sunrise Elementary School Parent Handbook (ex: no spaghetti straps, no jewelry, no makeup, no flip flops or open toed shoes, etc.)

Nutrition Break:

Each day, time is set aside for a nutrition and recess break. This time is very short and is meant to provide your child with a small snack and not a complete meal.

*** Please do not send sodas or sweets as a snack. ***

Students in both the morning and afternoon class should eat a meal before coming to school.  There is not sufficient time in the Kindergarten day to have a lunch period. *** Please inform us if your child has any food allergies. ***

Sharing:

Each individual teacher will have their own sharing procedures. Please do not allow your child to bring toys, jewelry, or other items to school at any time other than their assigned sharing day.

Birthdays:

If you wish to send a special snack, please let us know in advance. Miniature cupcakes, cookies, brownies, or rice crispy treats are more convenient and are more likely to be eaten.  Your child’s class has 24 students. *** Please do not send in sheet cakes, ice cream, candles, individual party favors, or balloons. ***

Homework:

Weekly Homework Packets:
Your child will be bringing home a homework folder with a weekly homework packet inside. The packet will be given to your child each Monday, and must be completed and returned on Friday. Please be sure to go over their work and sign the cover letter before returning the packet on Friday in your child’s folder. Returning the completed homework will be noted on the report card.  We hope that you will work together with your child during each activity and use your creativity to extend the activity as needed. The homework folder also includes additional pages that you and your child can practice together.

Nightly Reading:
We are asking that you read to your child or your child reads to you for a minimum of 10-15 minutes each day. Each night you will record on the cover sheet of the homework packet, the story/stories shared with your child.

Helping at Home:

You can smooth the way through kindergarten by:

  • Helping your child learn to take care of his/her own clothing (being able to work button, snaps, zippers, tie shoes, etc.)
  • Encourage respect for adults and peers, and exhibiting the ability to behave properly both in and out of the home.
  • Expecting your child to clean up after himself/herself in play and work situations.
  • Providing an area or space for your child to complete his/her weekly homework packet.
  • Reading many stories to your child.
  • Reviewing work papers and reinforcing what has been presented at school. If you notice that your child has a weakness in a particular area, please help him/her at home.
