Damaged Materials and Lost Books

Posted on

It is the end of the year and I am collecting all of the books, and loaned materials to students (wallets, whiteboards). Many things are lost or damaged and I have asked students to please take responsibility and pay for these items so that they can be replaced for next year’s students. They were informed at the beginning of the school year that these items were on loan and to take care of them. These are items that students have been using over the last few years and it IS possible to keep them in good condition. If your child was charged it is because things were either lost, or damaged with excessive writing, torn/ripped, or had stickers torn off that need to be replaced. Thanks to all the students who took really good care of their things. It is much appreciated.

End of Year Activities

Posted on

Dear Parents,
It’s hard to believe, but the end of the year is here! Your child has worked so hard throughout this year and now it is time to wind down and celebrate! Many things will be happening the last week of school so here are some details FYI…

All Week
• No homework this week
• Students will be eating lunch outdoors.
• It is recommended that your child comes with a water bottle to stay hydrated, and maybe even sunblock and/or a hat on these warmer days.
• BCM/Uniform shirts are still expected, unless it is a specific theme day.
• Science Fair Boards and Mission Projects/Slideshow Rubrics will trickle home all week

Tuesday, June 6th
* Staff vs 6th grade Students in a Volleyball game – your child might want to wear sunblock, sunglasses and a hat as we will be outdoors for a good hour. Parents are welcome to come and play on the staff side! 
* Going west Buddy Game with Mrs. Aratoli’s Class
* Turn in supplies to Ms. Yanez – students will be charged for missing items

Wednesday, June 7th
* Staff vs 6th grade Students in a Basketball game – your child might want to wear sunblock, sunglasses and a hat as we will be outdoors for a good hour. Parents are welcome to come and play on the staff side! 
*Yogurt Parfait Party for Making Healthy Eating Choices this Year and to celebrate Summer Birthdays
*AR Final Prizes. Final points will be posted on the blog.
* We will have a garage sale. One man’s junk is another man’s treasure, right?!  Your child will be able to sell items (optional) to other students to earn some extra class money before our final auction. No more than what can fit on and around their desk. Please check the items your child intends to sell and give your approval. No candy, food or drinks please. Again, students should not come with real money to class. This is being sold for class money to earn for final auction.
* We will clean out our desks and send things home. Please send your child with an extra bag or an emptied backpack.

Thursday, June 8th
*Jacks and Marbles with 1st Grade Buddies
* Germy Ball with Mrs. Watts Class
* Moana or Trolls with Ms. Yanez or Mrs. Jhattu (Must have signed permission slip)

Friday, June 9th LAST DAY!
* Game day! Students can bring a game or two from home to share with classmates. This should be a card or board game. Please avoid electronic
items that only involve one or two people.
* Final Auction – Turn in class money
* Report Cards sent home (unless there are outstanding bills).
*Yearbook Signing
*Collected Items Returned
*Minimum Day – 12:30 Dismissal

Students: Vacation officially begins at 12:30! Have a wonderful break and the best wishes in fifth grade. Please spend some time reading daily, and log onto iReady and THINK Central to stay sharp over the summer. I will miss you all so please come back and visit!

Parents: I hope this information answers any questions you may have. You are welcome to stop by and join us for the celebrations of this year-end. Also feel free to call me at school if you have any questions 688-8586 x150 or e-mail me at Dpitteng@egusd.net. Thanks for a spectacular year together!

Math Re-Do Tutorial TOMORROW 4-19

Posted on

Reminder: On our last day of spring break, students were given their math tests in order to work on re-do’s over the break. If your child is struggling, and you are struggling helping your child, then please plan on attending Wednesday from 11:15-1:15 in room B6. Please note the time change. The original note stated 12-2, but I’m working to accommodate lunch schedules. Parents are welcome to stay but student drop offs are fine.Students in spring break camp can attend as well but must have permission and it must be communicated to Ms. Sanders. If your child is not struggling, I welcome them to attend anyhow for review and practice as a peer tutor. If it’s a small group, I may begin preteaching the next chapter. Hope to see some of my students there tomorrow!

Crocker Art Museum Field Trip

Posted on

What an amazing day appreciating art! We are so fortunate that Crocker provided us this FREE opportunity! Huge thanks to our fabulous chaperones – Kelly Carrasca, Janay Eustace, Josefina Renteria, Gilbert Larot, and Serina McGee. Each student will be bringing home a pass for a family of 5 to revisit the museum. Please take advantage of the wonderful opportunity.

Winter Break Challenge

Posted on

I hope everyone is enjoying their time off. Please remember to take a look at our Winter Break Challenge that was given on our last day before break. It will keep you busy on days like today when it’s cold and rainy outside. A little bit of learning every day can make a big difference. 🙂 I’m having trouble uploading it, but if your child has lost it, email me at dpitteng@egusd.net and I can send you an attachment via email.

Nutrition Education

Posted on

Did you know that your child is exposed to a different fruit or vegetable each month to taste? We call this Harvest of the Month. Last month we tried green beans and today we tried zucchini. We tossed some grape tomatoes in Italian dressing then placed it on top of our zucchini slices to make ladybugs on a leaf. Many students are discovering they actually like some fruits and vegetables they thought they disliked or have never tried. Try adding these to your shopping list, or try finding other ways to prepare them. Today we talked about zucchini bread, adding it to lasagna or pasta, and even grilling with some seasoning. The students took a pledge to be more conscientious about their food choices. We are all striving for those 3-5 servings of fruits and veggies every day. Healthy bodies give us healthy minds which results in learning success!

Online Reading Material FREE!

Posted on

I’ve heard many kids share that they do not have access to reading material at home, or that it is limited. Your kids should be reading 20 minutes every night and they need access to a variety of literature. I have found a program called getepic.com. Your child will have access to hundreds of stories. The best part is that I can see how many minutes they read and how many books they finished. Some of the books might even transfer onto a test for their AR score. They just need to double check through AR Bookfinder to make sure it is their level and that it has a test. Ready to get started? Here’s how…

Go to getepic.com

Username is dpitteng@egusd.net

Password is school

Find your child’s profile and click on it to set up their reading preferences

Begin reading!

In preparation for our schoolwide Spelling Bee, we held a class contest to find our representative. Congratulations to our top entries which included Jaihvon, Omari, Stephanie, Allan, James and Jessenia. Our top 3 finalists were Keane, Nathan and Iyanu. After battling out an intense word list, Nathan will be our class representative at our BCM Spelling Bee. Congratulations to all of our top spellers!

AR Home Connect

Posted on

As a follow-up to the recent note I sent home about your child’s AR level, I have officially set you up through email to receive their scores. This will help you to monitor their progress. Please expect to see at least one score a week come through. These are taken as grades for reading. Students who do not test will receive 0’s. Please check your inbox or spam folder for a HomeConnect auto email. I believe you must confirm/accept the invitation. Please let me know if you have any questions or if you do NOT receive a request. Thanks!
