Today in class, we learned about a Hero’s Journey. There are 8 steps to a Hero’s Journey:
- Normal person/character starts at the beginning of the story
- Our character goes on a journey alone
- The character faces danger
- He/she makes a hard or important decision
- The decision results in a gift or skill or “thing” being received by the character
- The character continues on their journey and gets a loan.
- The character accepts the challenge and faces a test.
- The character wins the challenge, returns home, and is a hero.
We also read a myth called Thunder Helper today. This myth follows a Hero’s Journey really well. In the beginning, there is a creek Indian boy. He loves to help his tribe by collecting wood, and also fishing for fish. This is like part one, because this is at the beginning of the story. The boy is on his way to the river. This is like part 2, because he is journieying. As the boy is traveling to get to the river, he can hear loud sounds. He said it sounds like roars and thunder. The boy sees tie-snake and thunder struggling together. This is like part 3 because the boy finds some danger. The danger is that tie-snake and thunder are fighting. The problem is that in order for him to keep his powers, he can’t tell anyone where they came from, or else he’ll lose his powers. This is like part 6, because he faces another challenge. This is like part 7 because the boy decides to accept the challenge. The boy fights the battle. There were loud noises. Then, the boy returned. He had won the battle.
