Today in class my teacher brought in a some cubes and said,” These cubes have 6 faces each but when I add 2 I only get 10 faces why? And when I added another cube I got only 14 faces. Find a expression that works.” So we did and I will be telling you how to solve the problem my teacher gave me. He also said to call cubes rectangular prisms.

The blocks we used/ cubes/ rectangular prism

Well everyone noticed that every time we added a rectangular prism we got 4 more to the amount of faces, the amount of sides shown on the rectangular prism.  My group thought that if we multiply by 6 would we get the same answer, we did not get the same answer but we noticed that if you multiplied by the amount of cubes by 6. You would normally get 2 or more. For example if we have 3 squares all connected we would have 14 instead of 18. This is because the middle square would only have 4 faces showing and the other 2 would have 5 faces showing so you would get 14 faces in total. If we were to find a expression to solve any it would be 4n + 2  and n being the number of cubes. We add two because if we had 8 faces and we need 10. So that is why we add two and the two faces on the ends of the cube.
