Universal Transitional Kindergarten Will Increase Access to Educational Options for Families

ELK GROVE, Calif. – December 14, 2021 – Elk Grove Unified School District is proud to implement a five-year phase-in process to expand Universal Transitional Kindergarten (UTK). Universal TK is a policy framework that allows all families with preschool or TK aged children the opportunity to voluntarily enroll their child. Beginning with the 2022/2023 school year, Elk Grove will begin the increased enrollment options and eventually offer services to all three and four-year old children by the year 2025/2026. The program will be funded through a combination of TK, California State Preschool, Head Start programs and/or Title 1 funds. Parents/guardians who live within the boundaries of the Elk Grove Unified School District and whose child’s fifth birthday occurs between September 2 and February 2 in the year the student is enrolled (September 2, 2022 and February 2, 2023), will be eligible to enroll in TK for that year or in this case, the 2022/2023 school year.

Registration for TK will begin on January 12, 2022. Families interested in registering their child for TK (and whose child’s fifth birthday occurs between September 2, 2022 and February 2, 2023), should complete the registration paperwork as soon as possible. The packet should be returned to the homeschool to be time/date stamped, as slots at the home school are available on a first come, first served basis. Alternate sites will be offered if the program fills up. Packets for TK are available for pick up beginning 7:30 a.m. on January 12, 2022, at the home school.

The Kindergarten enrollment window will also begin January 12, 2022. In order to participate in the randomized prioritization for Kindergarten enrollment, all paperwork must be submitted to the home school office no later than February 24, 2022 at 3:30 p.m. Students are age eligible for Kindergarten if they turn five years old on or before September 1, 2022.
