The Rutter Story Map Team Takes Top Awards for Fourth Year in a Row and holds Strongest Record of Any California Grade 4-8 Division
ELK GROVE, Calif. – June 7, 2021 – The James Rutter Middle School Story Map team won first place in the 2021 My California GIS Mapping Showcase and Competition for the fourth consecutive year, and the team will go on to represent California in the national competition sponsored by Environmental Systems Research Institute. The team also placed second and third this year, bringing their total record to ten placements and one honorable mention since the team began participating in the competition in 2018. The James Rutter Middle School Story Map team now holds the strongest record of any California school in the grade 4-8 division.
This is a major accomplishment for the James Rutter Middle School team, as the team, like all other story map teams across California, faced the challenge of distance learning, a modified class schedule and reduced class hours due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The My California GIS Mapping Showcase and Competition is an annual event that began in 2016, and the competition encourages middle and high school students to harness the power of Geographic Information Systems and get connected with their state by producing an online map that focuses on stories, issues, or ideas that are important to them.
