Elk Grove Unified Resumes Outdoor Sports and Welcomes Back Student-Athletes Preparing for Competition

ELK GROVE, Calif. – March 4, 2021 –The Elk Grove Unified School District (EGUSD) received the green light to resume Purple Tier sports activities on February 1st which allows for practices and competitions for Cross Country, Golf, Swimming, Tennis and Track and Field and to resume Softball and Baseball as Red Tier sports. EGUSD participates in three leagues: Delta, Metro and Greater Sacramento and while typically each section would determine the season of sport, at this time, each league determines its season of sport. Elk Grove Unified welcomes these student-athletes back and looks forward to seeing students engage in their sport and compete once again.

Updated guidance from public health on February 19th allowed for additional outdoor sports like football, water polo and soccer to begin once testing and waiver protocols as outlined by State and County Public Health Guidelines and the EGUSD Guidance for Youth Sports Conditioning are in place. All sports and athletes are expected to follow public health guidelines such as social distancing, frequent hand washing and following mask requirements. As of March 3, 2021, all EGUSD football teams began practicing and are looking forward to beginning competition starting as early as March 19, 2021. Further guidance for indoor sports will be provided in future communications.

Related to attendance and spectators, based on the health and safety tiered guidelines, athletes, coaches, officials, event staff, medical staff, trainers, student-athletes and immediate household members are considered tier 1 priority members. Other groups of people will be organized into lesser prioritized tiers from essential to non-essential and per COVID-19 guidelines for any event or practice. In tier 2, members of the press will be able to attend sports events and in tier 3, spectators and vendors may attend venues.
