Dear Mr. Henshaw

In the novel we are reading, Dear Mr. Henshaw, the main character, Leigh Botts, has several things he wants: His dad to come back, his dog to come back, and to find out who is stealing his lunch. At the end of page 72, Leigh, who is already mad at his parents for getting a divorce, finds out two pieces of bad news. What are the two pieces of bad news he finds out, and how will this bad news affect how he resolves his problems? (Think: how will it make it harder for his problems to be solved?)

The many flavors of engineering

Today, from Mr. Heredia, we learned about many different types of engineers. Some work with electricity, some work with machines, and some work with chemicals. Some build bridges and roads, some build airplanes, some make cars, and some make medicine. If it was manufactured, some engineer probably had a hand in making it or making it better.

If you could design something new or make a better design of something that already exists, what would you make? Why would you make it? What type of engineer(s) would have to work on the project?

Take a moment and share your personal dream. What do you see for yourself and your future?

Why is Dunlap Dewberry Nice to Opal?

Because of Winn Dixie, Chapter 13 Response

Up to this point in the novel, we learn that Opal has no friends her own age. In chapter thirteen, Dunlap Dewberry, the older brother, both teases Opal and is kind to her. In a paragraph, explain why you think he is both mean and nice. Try to keep it to one paragraph, but you can write more. Can you predict anything about the future of Opal and Dunlap based on this fact?

Walk Two Moons, Chapter 26 Response

In literature (and sometimes in life), dreams are often glimpses into the future and hints about things that the main character is going through.  Just as in life, dreams in literature are often communicated to us through symbols and pictures. Interpreting these images can help us understand more about our lives and the lives of the characters we read about.

At the end of chapter 26 in Walk Two Moons, Sal has a dream about her mom. Now it’s time for you to interpret her dream. What do you think her dream means? What does it tell you about Sal’s mom? Does it tell you anything about Sal? Let us know what you think!

Squishy Circuits!

Yesterday we learned a bit more about electricity, with the help of playdoh! What did you learn about electricity in this lesson?

Some things to think about:

What was the difference between the red and the green dough? How were you able to make the light light up? Can you explain how energy moved to light up your LED?

If you want to try making your own squishy circuits at home, this website explains how to do it: http://courseweb.stthomas.edu/apthomas/SquishyCircuits/index.htm

Are there any other projects you see on that page you’d like to try?

Searching the Internet

For the last few weeks in the computer lab, we have learned information about finding credible sources on the internet. We have learned how search engines work, how to use effective search techniques, and how to identify credible sources. Please share your thoughts about some of the things you learned about in the computer lab with Mrs. Swift.

In class we learned how to add analysis to your writing. Be sure to add some analysis as you explain your thoughts about searching the internet.
