In chapter three, there are some hints that the boy will have to take over the role as the man of the house. There is also some evidence that the boy will not be able to fill this role. Take a moment and explain what the examples are that show that the boy is going to have to be the man of the house now. What shows that he is not ready to take on this role? Also, why do you think the author is giving us these hints so early in the novel? The man should be coming home soon, right?

In chapter three, the author tells the reader t he boy will have to take the fathers role in the family. When the father goes to jail earlier in the story, the boy puts on one of his father’s shirts foreshadowing that the boy will have to take the fathers role in the family until he returns from jail. The author gives the reader these hints so early in the story because the author wants us to know what will happen in the story. For example, in The Bridge to Terabithia the author gives us hints far in the beginning that Leslie will change his life and will die. They do that so you know something important will happen and they want you know what.

In chapter three, the boy learns he has to take the role as the man in the family. He puts on his father’s clothes and they don’t fit so that means he isn’t ready to take the role of the man in the family. That means the dad is in jail.
