Writing Like a Scientist

Our class practiced writing scientific observations of a bean plant growing from seed. We were exploring the idea that seeds contain everything needed to begin growing. We germinated seeds (pinto beans) and wrote down observations. The goal of the writing activity was to write like a scientist. You should see examples of students using precise scientific language and an absence of “I” and “my.” Samples of the student observations are below.

  1. October 7 2015 The bean stem is 7/16 inches. It got 3/16 inches bigger than yesterday. The bean got greener than yesterday. Also the bottom half of the bean protective covering split more than yesterday.

  2. Bean plant observations
    October 5,2015

    1) The bean has grown so much.It has grown 4.5cm long.
    2) The specimen’s protective covery has broken. The stem green.
    3) The color of the roots is brown and a white creamy color.
    4) The bean seems to be growing. The stem is 4 cm long. The roots are 2 cm long.
    5) There are 4-5 roots.

My bean grew. It was a few centimeters. It is almost 2 inches long and one inch high.

  4. In October 5, 2015 the specimen had shedded out of its protective covering and has grown about 2 and 1 half inches and the bean has split open to reveal a leaf. The color on the top is green but on the bottom it is still a whitish color just like the day before.

  5. Bean Facts

On October 7, 2015 the color of the bean got a little darker with it’s color it turned light green while it’s under protecting covering still pills off and it’s roots get darker.

  6. The specimen has lost it’s color. It is starting to sprout because it is green. I see a sprout coming out of it. The specimen has a green leave. It grew about 3/6 cm.

  7. The been has grown about 4 inches and has a little tiny leaf on the top of the bean and now has roots. The color is a light green but as it goes up it gets more green.

1.) The bean has grown a root but a little bit longer.and also the bean is green.
2.) The specimen is longer but looks like it is growing up-side down.
3.) The specimen has grown and is 3 in a half inches and the bean has grown tiny roots.

  9. October 5, 2015

The specimen has cracked open and has developed an unidentified object growing on the left side of the cup.The size of the object is about 3.1 centimeters and the color of the object is a greenish, tan, and tent white color

  10. The bean specimen is starting to sprout through the protective covering of the bean. This is because a bean has everything it needs to start growing which it’s stored food, protective covering, and an undeveloped plant. The roots are growing out of the side and downward of the bean specimen. The roots are about 1.4 millimeters long. When the roots came downward and out of the plant the protective covering peeled off. Also there are about 5-8 roots growing out.

  11. 10/5/15

The bean grew lots of parts of the root. The protective covering came off fully. The tip of the plant is the bean. The bean grew a very little leaf. The leaf is about 13 millimeters. The bean is about 2 centimeters tall.

  12. Our class did an experiment on beans. We wanted to test if it had all of its needs. A seed contains an undeveloped plant, stored food, and a protective covering. The bean was in a plastic cup. We used a paper towel and damped it. We put the bean on the side of the paper towel so it won’t suffer on the bottom. Then the next day we checked out the beans. Most of them grew big and fatter than before. We took a new bean and compared it with the bean that was in the cup. We did not take it out because that would have messed it up. Then about 2 days later we checked our bean again. Mostly all of them had grown a white stem. About 4 days later most of the stems had turn green. Now a week had passed by and the stems were green and most had grown tiny roots.About 3 weeks later beans had sprouted. Now about all the beans have sprouted from that lesson, we learned that beans do have all of their needs.

  13. The bean was larger than the other bean.

  14. October 2,2015
The seed specimen has grown about a centimeter longer compared to yesterday’s observations. The bean’s protective covering appears to be breaking revealing a whitish-green color. On the bottom of the bean the whitish-green part appears to have a brown line separating one side and the other. The unidentified object growing from the bean looks as if it is unfolding from the brown line. The bean specimen appears to be growing because on the first couple of days before the stem sprouts the bean is stored with food and a protective covering and the undeveloped plant is sprouting.

  15. I think the song, Space Oddity is really about is a man, Major Tom, is getting ready to do a mission in a car and gets in a car crash. When it says take your protein pills means it is going to be a harsh ride and he needs them to keep him alive. Also the song says put your helmet on because it’s going to be a bumpy ride so he needs it for protection. When ground control is counting down he is getting ready to start driving. Major Tom had succeeded his mission by doing so he broke his car and is now stranded in the middle of nowhere. That’s why he made the grade and people wants to know what shirts he wears. Also when he steps out the door he is stepping out of his car. Now he is dozing off, walking to who knows what. When it says he is floating in a most peculiar way means that he sees blackness and is now falling down to the ground and now he is lying there on the ground. He drove and walk for thousands of miles. Now he is worry about his wife and he is now dreaming of him driving it somewhere for ever and in his dream he is repeating these word: “ Planet earth is blue and there is nothing I can do.”
