Because of Winn Dixie, Chapter 13 Response

Up to this point in the novel, we learn that Opal has no friends her own age. In chapter thirteen, Dunlap Dewberry, the older brother, both teases Opal and is kind to her. In a paragraph, explain why you think he is both mean and nice. Try to keep it to one paragraph, but you can write more. Can you predict anything about the future of Opal and Dunlap based on this fact?

  1. I think that Dunlap Dewberry both teases Opal and is kind to her because Dunlap might like Opal so that is why he always tease her and bees nice with Opal. This is also a foreshadowing of what might happen with Dunlap and his little brother Stevie Dewberry. Maybe they both will like Opal in the future then Opal will like one of the brothers and she will want to be friends with the brother. This also tells us that in the future when Dunlap reveals if he likes Opal or not maybe Opal will reveal that she may like him to and then Stevie will be alright with it if he does not like Opal like his brother Dunlap maybe.

  2. In the novel, Because of Winn Dixie, Dunlap, I think, will try to be Opal’s boyfriend. I think Opal might like Dunlap, but maybe not. Maybe Dunlap likes her, I know probably Opal doesn’t like him, but maybe she could I want to know more.

  3. In Because of Winn Dixie, Opal has no friends her own age. She only is friends with Win Dixie, Gloria Dump, and Miss Franny Block. Maybe she will be friends with Dougie, one of the Dewberry boys, or maybe even “best friends”. Dougie was defending her, right? So maybe he secretly likes her but doesn’t want to tell Stevie because Stevie is probably a blabber mouth. This means he tells everybody’s secrets.

  4. I think Dunlap is nice, because he is said back off of her to his younger brother. I think he might like her, because he is sticking up for her. I think in the future they might marry each other, like each other normally, or they might be real good friends. Dunlap might also be a replacement, because he sticking up for her and they might be real good friends so this is what I think might happen with Dunlap dewberry and opal balloni or should I say Opal dewberry. This is what I got so far but I’m focus on my ideas I had before.

  5. In the novel, “Because of Winn-Dixie” the two brothers, Dunlap and Stevie both tease Opal, the main character. One of the brothers Dunlap was teasing her and being kind. I think he was being kind to her because maybe he thought he and his brother went way too far with teasing her. For example, this guy teased a student in my class and he was a little mental. So, even though I used to kind of be mean to him I stood up for him. I predict that Opal and Dunlap might become really good friends. I predict this because since he stood up for her opal probably respects that so, they will probably become friends.

  6. I think Dunlup Dewberry ,the older brother, was both nice and mean to Opal, because maybe he likes her, and wants to be “close friends” with Opal, but Opal thinks they’re bald-headed babies, and think they’re mean and rude to Gloria Dump. At first Dunlap was being mean to Opal, but all of a sudden he told Stevie “ Oh, lay her off” like if he were trying to defend Opal. I also pridict that Winn- Dixie might cause Opal and Dunlap to be friends maybe Dunlap might help her work at Gurtrude’s Pets. These were my opinions and prediction based on chapter thirteen of Because of Winn- Dixie.

  7. In chapter 13, from the book Because of Winn Dixie, Dunlap was acting mean and nice at the same time. This could mean that he likes her. Some times when a kid likes someone, they might pick on you but still was being nice to her. Not only that, but Gloria Dump worded out that maybe he likes her by saying “it might be nice to hang out with them boys”.

  8. Dunlap Dewberry is so nice to Opal, because probably Dunlap agrees with Opal. I chapter thirteen, Dunlap wants to protect Opal, because probably Dunlap likes her. In the chapter, Chapter thirteen probably Dunlap likes Opal. I did the following: complex, compound, and appositive sentences.

  9. In the novel, “Because of Winn Dixie,” Dunlap Dewberry teases Opal but stands up for her. There is a reason why I think he’s mean and nice: he likes her but he’s embarrassed. First of all, I think he is mean and nice because he really likes her but he’s embarrassed at the same time. For example, when people tease others, it’s a chance that they have a crush on them. Dunlap probably has a crush on her, but teases her so people think he doesn’t like her at all. Example: Dunlap said “Oh, lay off her,” and “He don’t mean it.” My prediction of Opal and Dunlap is that Opal will finally like Dunlap. I think this because Opal always teases Dunlap and calls him a “bald headed baby.” In chapter thirteen, Dunlap teases and is nice to her at the same time.

  10. In the novel “ Because of Winn-Dixie ” chapter 13, Dunlap Dewberry, the older brother, both teases Opal and is kind to her. I think he is both mean and nice to Opal because maybe he likes Opal, and wants her to be his “ friend ”, but Opal doesn’t like him because she calls him a bald-headed baby, mean, and ignorant. In the future, I think Dunlap Dewberry and Opal will be a nice friends at the end, because of Winn-Dixie.

  11. In the novel, Because of Winn-Dixie Dunlap Dewberry at first was acting very mean to Opal. Then he started acting very nice all of a sudden. I think he started to act nice to Opal because he must of all of a sudden thought Opal was a little cute. Then he might have thought that Opal, then thought she was ugly again. That is what I think happened in chapter 13 in Because of Winn-Dixie, but I think Opal and Dunlap might fall I love later in the story.

  12. In chapter thirteen of “Because of Winn Dixie,” Dunlap Dewberry is rude but then kind to Opal. I think Dunlap does this because he likes Opal. For example, at first Dunlap teases Opal for visiting an old lady that some people call ‘the witch’, or Gloria. But then he defends her after Stevie, his younger brother, messed with her. I can predict that probably Opal might like Dunlap later in the story, because of Winn Dixie.

  13. In chapter 13 in Because of Winn Dixie Dunlap Dewberry, the older brother,is mean and nice to Opal. I think that that Dunlap likes Opal and, he was kind and mean. Sometimes when someone is mean to someone they could like that person. I believe that Dunlap likes Opal because Dunlap was mean and got nice to Opal. So, this is my reason why I think that Dunlap likes Opal.

  14. In the novel, “Because of Winn-Dixie” chapter 13 Dunlap Dewberry, the older brother, both teases Opal and is kind to her. I think that Dunlap both teases and be nice to Opal because he likes her. Also, I think that Dunlap likes Opal because he might not be able to explain why he like her so he could only be mean to her, but sometimes he might catch himself being mean. For example, when Dunlap’s other brother was being mean to Opal he told his brother to stop it. Another reason I think that Dunlap is mean to Opal is because he thinks that Opal is very nice, I think that because he was trying to help Opal from getting harmed by his brother. I also predict that Opal and Dunlap will start to like each other because the main character always get what they want and so Opal might like Dunlap for helping her out. There is another prediction of mines, which is that Dunlap will tell Opal he likes her at the end and Opal might say she likes him, too. That is what I think about Dunlap being both nice and mean to Opal and my predictions about what might happen between them.

  15. In chapter 13 in, “Because of Winn Dixie,” tells about Dunlap Dewberry, being nice and mean at the same time to Opal. I think that means that he, Dunlap Dewberry, likes Opal. I think that because if a boy is mean and nice to a GIRL, that should mean they like her because it happens all the time in reality. Eventually, they would be boyfriend and girlfriend, which is just my opinion, in the future, based on the information that i got today. In conclusion, Opal does not like Dunlap now, but later on, that will change.

  16. When Dunlap was mean then nice to Opal was maybe because he wants to be friends with Opal and feels bad for Opal because she has no friends her age and he maybe wants to be friends with her. Dunlap wants to be friends with Opal so she won’t be lonely with the old ladies . He maybe doesn’t want her to be with the which,Gloria Dump,so he wants to be friends with her. Their is another reason, he might like Opal and he wants to be her friend. He might want to get know her, but he is maybe to shy.

  17. I think the boys are going to make friends with Opal. They might meet the rest of Opal’s friends. The boys probably won’t call Gloria Dump a witch any more. Probably when they meet Gloria dump the boys will be afraid to go in Gloria Dump’s house. The boys will grow up and both fight over Opal.

  18. In the story of “Because Of Wind-Dixie” Dunlap Dewberry stands up for Opal, which is weird, but he might want to befriend her in the story later. In the novel, Dunlap is described in a neutral way now, but Dunlap is mean and kind of ingnorant in the story, but starts to be a little nice to opal in the story. So what I think in the story what is going to happen is that opal and dunlap are going to start being friends in the story, but I think the brother is going to be mad in the story.

  19. In chapter thirteen, Dunlap Dewberry, Stevie’s older brother, both teases Opal and is kind to her because he might like her. He might like her because he is sometimes kind to her which shows that he might like her and he teases her sometimes and some people is mean to people they like. I think later in the story Dunlap might be her friend.

  20. In chapter 13 of the novel Because of Winn-Dixie, Dunlap Dewberry, Stevie’s older brother, has been teasing and being mean and nice to Opal. I think Dunlap is being mean and nice to Opal because maybe he likes her. When Dunlap is mean to Opal, he might be trying to hide he feels about Opal and to make her feel like he doesn’t like her. And when he is nice, Dunlap might not want to be too mean or she will think that he is a bully or Dunlap might think Opal will tell on him to the preacher, Opal’s dad, or that sometimes it doesn’t feel good to be too mean to the person he likes. I predict the future of Opal and Dunlap Dewberry is that they are going to be best friends then Dunlap shows or tells the truth of how he feels about Opal or they are going to fall in love together, but if only Opal forgives Dunlap and understands how he feels.

  21. I think that Dunlap is mean and nice to Opal because of the fact that he likes her.
This makes me think that he likes her because he is probally being mean so she does not know that he likes her but is also being nice because in the last chapter I think that he went a little to far in his cruelness, so he felt bad. In the future I think that they will be friends.

  22. In chapter 13, Dunlap Dewberry, the older brother, is mean and nice to Opal. I have some reasons why I think Dunlap Dewberry is nice and mean to Opal. The first reason is he probably has a crush on her, but he thinks if he tells her she will make fun of him. I think he is nice because he thinks she would be nice to him, but when she isn’t he starts to be mean. The second reason is maybe he just wants to be friends. I think this because when Stevie, little brother, starts making fun of Opal Dunlap said,” Oh lay off her. I predict that Dunlap and Opal will just be friends. That is what happened in chapter 13, in Because of Winn-Dixie.

  23. Up to this point in “Because of Winn Dixie’’, we learn that Opal has no friend her own age, but that is about to change. In chapter thirteen, Dunlap Dewberry, the older brother of the Dewberry’s, both teases opal and is kind to her, I think this is because Dunlap likes Opal and not just as a friend. I predict that Opal will eventually begin to like Dunlap and they will like each other and because they like each other they might start to date when they get older, after all they are only ten.
