Searching the Internet

For the last few weeks in the computer lab, we have learned information about finding credible sources on the internet. We have learned how search engines work, how to use effective search techniques, and how to identify credible sources. Please share your thoughts about some of the things you learned about in the computer lab with Mrs. Swift.

In class we learned how to add analysis to your writing. Be sure to add some analysis as you explain your thoughts about searching the internet.

  1. In the computer lab I have learned many things that have helped me to know more about research on the internet. For, example I learned that most websites that are either .edu, .org, or, .gov are usually more credible than other websites. This is usually true because websites that are with these are made by either colleges, government companies, and are usually easier to read than other websites. In the computer lab I have also learned that you should check the information you get from a website with information from other websites. This is important because if you are doing a report or even just talking about the topic you have researched you want to have accurate information and not just anything that is made up. Which brings me to how we also learned to read a website and make our best judgment on how reasonable a website is and if it makes no sense or sounds incorrect?

  2. I have learned lots of information about finding relevant sources on the internet. For example, I learned that if you type in, “What is Mars’ atmosphere like?” Google, will scan through all the websites and try to find the words “what” and “is” and all the words you have typed in. That is how Google tries to find the websites you are looking for. Also, I have learned some techniques on searching for your criteria. For instance, you DON’T want to type the whole question. Like I said, one of the search engines, Google, tries to find the websites that have the most words that you’ve typed. Try to search in short search criteria, for instance, “Mars atmosphere” would be good to type in. Websites that end with dot gov, org, or edu are more reasonable websites to begin with. For example, dot gov is from the government and not just from any random person who decides to create a website on Mars and put random facts down. These are very important when searching on the internet because you can get irrelevant topics when searching.

  3. What I learned from Mrs.Swift is that .edu, .org, & .net are symbols for proper websites that real writers have posted on the website and that are reasonable things that kids can read and not high level writing that college students can read so that is what I have learned from Mrs.Swift in the computer lab.

  4. In the computer lab we learned many things about how to resarch and what you want out of a website. For example, we are researching things about Mars. Some websites I went to wern’t good because they were not on the topic I wanted to research. So, i went to a website that ended in Edu[education] and it explained my topic very well. then Mrs.Swift said when you go to a website make sure you can read it. I followed her instruction, and I was reading and and some of the words that they were there didn’t make any sense. That’s what I have learned about resaerch in the computer lab.

  5. In the computer lab i learned alot about things. For instance if go on a website and it has .edu that website could be helpful. The website that ends in .edu is really helpful, because its usually from a educational website. You really need this tipe of website, because if you are doing a project you don’t want to go like for example yahoo answers or a blog, because random people could paste random things that is not true and you don’t want to have fail you project, because of the random people that posted things right. I also learned that you have to double check on the thing you searched for. You would want to double check your search cratiria, because it might be faulse and not true. These were two things that I learned in the computer lab.

  6. I learned many things from the internet. The best websites are .org, .gov, .edu. those are some good websites to learn from. Those are also good websites for reasearching. these are easier websites to read from. These are good websites to read from because they have words you can read. It is better than wikipedia because wikipedia has words you cant read.

  7. In the computer lab I have learned many things that helped me research online. One thing that I learned was that if a website end in .org, .edu, .net, or.gov the website would be a good website to research on. Also, I learned that websites that are a blog or forums would not be a good page to research something on because someone might post a random answer. Another thing I learned was not to put a question as search criteria. For example, if you put “How does the brain function?” there might be random websites because there might not be a website that has a question mark at the end or stars with an answer. Last but not least, I learned about that if you get information from a website you should also double check the information with other websites, too. That is important because if you get an answer on a page, it might be wrong so if you check with others and it is the same it might be correct. Those are some things I learned that would help me research thing online.

  8. In the computer lab, I learned about credible sources, and how to use search engines. You would know that a website is a good one because it might end in .gov, .edu, or .org. This would be good because these websites .gov may be from the government, .edu might be from a college, like UC DAVIS, and .org might be from a show like PBS Kids.org. One example of a search engine is Google. When you want to search something on Google, you shouldn’t type down the whole question. You should only write the important parts of the question so Google wouldn’t just put down any old question. That is what I learned from the computer lab.

  9. In the computer lab with Mrs. Swift I learned how to use good resources and how to find good resources. You do that by, first checking other websites with the previous web site you were on to see if they have the same information and if they do it is reasonable enough for you to use the web site. It is reasonable because they both are most likely telling you the right information. The other way is to see if the website makes sense. I say this because it wouldn’t make sense if the web site said it is okay to litter and you know that is not true so if it is telling you wrong things this web site does not have the right information you need. The last thing is about which extension you use. If the extension is .com that will work but you may want to trust websites that end with .gov or .edu. . These will work because the websites were made by governments and people with and education. And those were the things I learned in the computer lab with Mrs.Swift.
