Photo doucumentary

Photojournalism is the type of journalism characterized by the use of images to tell a story. The images may have captions or they narrate the story they depict. The difference between a photograph and photojournalism is that a photograph focuses on ongoing situations while photojournalism involves specific events that tell a complete story. The National Press Photographers Association (NPPA) acknowledges the concern of  every person’s need both to be fully informed about public events and to be recognized as part of the world in which we live. The code of ethics  is intended to promote the highest quality in all forms of visual journalism and to strengthen public confidence in the profession. It is also meant to serve as an educational tool both for those who practice and for those who appreciate photojournalism. To that end, The National Press Photographers Association sets forth the following rules to ensure credibility for the photos that they shot and the story of how they were depicted.

  1. Be accurate and comprehensive in the representation of subjects.
  2. Resist being manipulated by staged photo opportunities.
  3. Be complete and provide context when photographing or recording subjects. Avoid stereotyping individuals and groups. Recognize and work to avoid presenting one’s own biases in the work.
  4. Treat all subjects with respect and dignity. Give special consideration to vulnerable subjects and compassion to victims of crime or tragedy. Intrude on private moments of grief only when the public has an overriding and justifiable need to see.
  5. While photographing subjects do not intentionally contribute to, alter, or seek to alter or influence events.
  6. Editing should maintain the integrity of the photographic images’ content and context. Do not manipulate images or add or alter sound in any way that can mislead viewers or misrepresent subjects.
  7. Do not pay sources or subjects or reward them materially for information or participation.
  8. Do not accept gifts, favors, or compensation from those who might seek to influence coverage.
  9. Do not intentionally sabotage the efforts of other journalists.

Abstract Photography

Abstract photography creates for dramatic images. It relies on our more primal sense of form, color and detail. It does not represent the subject in a literal way. Abstract photography can be done almost anywhere whether it be your neighborhood or surroundings. Unlike other types of photography, abstract photography does not cost money, time and travel to different locations.

Studio Project

Alex Koloskov is a commercial photographer who teaches  at Photigy.com. Instructor at KelbyOne.com, Udemy.com and Skillfieed.com.

“I’m a mix of technicality, innovation and out of the box thinking. I love taking on technical challenges in anything I do, including photography.

As a photographer, I am completely self taught. I don’t know the rules, nor do I care about them. I don’t follow the herd, I do it my way. That’s turned out to be invaluable in what I do. It has allowed me to experiment, see outside the borders, challenge the authorities and create a stunning photography style that is crisp, sharp and crystal clear.”

Some of his works include liquid, food, products, and jewelry. :

For my Studio project, I will bring in jewelry and try to imitate how focused and neat his photographs are. Also, he uses a dark background with the lighting directly on the product so it stands out.

Photogram Reasearch

Photogram- an image created without a camera by placing objects directly onto the surface of a light-sensitive material such as photographic paper and then exposing it to light. The usual result is a negative shadow image that shows variations in tone that depends upon the transparency of the objects used. Artists that make photograms are Man Ray and Markus Amm. Although there are many more, they are the most notable. Photogram samples:

My idea for my photogram I would like to use some everyday objects and make out a face or an image. I would also want to use some transparent items but I don’t know how to incorporate it yet.

Developing Review

Pour in the chemicals one at a time, Developer first then agitate 5 seconds every 30 seconds for the determined time. Repeat process for the stop and fix chemicals and adjust agitation according to instructions.

After you are done, you can dismantle the container and take out the film. Then, hang and let dry.

Composition Techniques

Rule of thirds positioning the most important elements in your scenes along the lines or the intersection points.

Balancing elements balance the “weight” of your subject by including another object of lesser importance to fill the empty space.

Leading Lines Use different types of lines (straight, diagonal, zigzag, etc.) to enhance the photo’s composition.

Symmetry and Patterns Makes an eye catching composition. Breaking the pattern or symmetry creates tension and adds a focal point to the scene.

Viewpoint Impacts photo’s composition. Try to shoot from high above, down, from the side, etc.

Background choose a plain background so it would not distract or take away from the subject.

Depth Create depth by including objects in the foreground, middle ground, and background.

Framing Isolate the the main subject from the outside world by framing the scene.

Cropping eliminate background noise so the subject is the focal point.

Experimentation  Don’t worry about film processing costs or running out of shots, experiment with the composition.

Where I’m From – Poem

I am from coffee mugs, from my mom’s heels and my dad’s briefcase.

I am from the smell of cooked food at dinner.

I am from the daisies in the garden, the soil from the Earth.

I am from Christmas and hospitality, from Caroline, Bobby and the Leonidas clan.

I am from loud talking and laughter.

I am from saving for the rainy days and the early bird catches the worm.

I am from Christianity that prays every night.

I am from the Philippines, rice and adobo.

From the opening of presents, the family reunions, and the celebration of a debutant.

I am from a photo album where memories are cherished ad frozen forever.
