Pretending to be a Grandma

A Story From the Big, Bad Wolf’s Point of View

One day I was wandering a forest doing what all other wolves do.  I saw a little house and I was getting hungry and tired so I went in. There was a grandma sitting on her bed then she said,” Hey wolf get out of my home my granddaughter is about to be  here with muffins cause I’m not feeling well today and I don’t want you here because yo stick and eat people as food. You all so are the worst creature in the world. So,goodbye wolf! So long!”

I got so mad at that old bat that I growled at her and said,” I will stay in here old bat and you are not going to stop me.”

“How do you know wolf”, the grandma said angrily.

“Because i’m going to trap you in this closet and block it with that wood over there on the ground.”, I replied.

“Ah that won’t be necessary.”, grandma said as I closed the closet and blocked it with the wood.  That old bat kept banging on the closet door.  Then I heard a knocking on the door and so did the old bat then she screamed,” That must be Red open the door.”

“If you scream one more time i’ll throw you out ,okay .”, I said to that wrinkly thing.

I quickly jumped into the bed and in my best grandma voice I said,”Come in sweetie oh you brought muffins for me how lovely.”

“Um, grandma what big nose you have.”, Red said frightened.

I replied,” The better to smell the muffins.”

Red responded scared,”What big teeth you have.”

I replied,”The better to chew the muffins.”

Red said terrified,” What big feet you have.”

I said,” The better to walk eating those muffins.”

“ Um ‘grandma’ you look very different,”Red said like I wasn’t her grandma.

I chased Red out of the forest then went back to that grandma’s home and sat at the table then ate the muffins along with the pie sitting on the counter. Oh no while I was chasing Red ,grandma got out and called the huntsman over, “ Where is that wolf Ms.Hood oh never mind I see him. He will be gone In a flash.” I ran away never to return again.

Question

Which dissolves better in water salt or baking soda?

Hypothesis

If I put water and salt in one cup and water and baking soda in another, then salt will dissolve better.

Background Information

Table salt is more soluble in water than baking soda because of the difference in polarity, bond types and compound size. Salt, or sodium chloride, is bound by ionic bonds and is considered extremely polar. Water, or H2O, is also very polar.

When sodium chloride, or NaCl, is dissolved in water, it is easily broken into individual Na+and Cl-ions.

Baking soda, or sodium bicarbonate, consists of a Na+ ion bound to a larger bicarbonate ion.  Although this compound is polar, it is less polar than sodium chloride.  This means it is less soluble than NaCl. Also, although the Na+ ions easily disassociate in a polar solvent such as water, the bicarbonate ion never truly dissolves. Bicarbonate, or HCO3-, is an organic molecule composed of covalent bonds. Covalent compounds do not dissolve in polar solvents. The HCO3- ion takes a hydrogen atom from water to form carbonic acid, which then decomposes to form CO2 gas and water.

 Procedures

  1. Gather my materials
  2. Fill both cups with 8 ounces of water
    3. Put 2 teaspoons of salt in one cup and stir 5 times
    4. Put 2 teaspoons of baking soda in the other cup and stir 5 times
    5. Look to see which one dissolved
  3. Record results
  4. Repeat steps 2-6 two more times
  5. Record results

Materials

  • 2 plastic 12 ounce cups
  • Salt
  • Baking soda
  • Water
  • A spoon
  • Measuring cup
  • Teaspoon

Conclusion

Based on my results I found out that my hypothesis was incorrect. Baking soda dissolved better than salt in water after stirring 5 times and waiting for about 5 minutes. In each trial baking soda dissolved better because it was clearer to see through than the salt was. Based on my results I learned that the amount of water and salt or baking soda might affect which dissolves better. I also learned that baking soda takes less time to dissolve than salt.
