The Boy Next Door – Laura Dower

Have you ever read a book about how friends get along? The book, The Boy Next Door, by Laura Dower, is about how Taryn and Jeff’s friendship changes when they get to middles school. Things change in middle school because Taryn starts to hang out with girls more and Jeff starts to hang out with boys more. The main characters of the book are Taryn and Jeff. This book is about how friends can get along well and sometimes don’t get along so well. One of my favorite parts in the book is when there is an awesome carnival at school and Taryn is the carnival crew leader. I like this part of the book because there are a lot of crazy things happening. For example, the school’s principal wore swim trunks, a Hawaiian shirt, and lei to the carnival. The book might teach some people a lesson about friendship. I would give this book 7 out of 10. I would give this book that rating because it grabbed me but it was not my favorite book. I would recommend this book to girls because Taryn has a little crush on a boy and there is other girly stuff like wearing make-up. I don’t think boys would really enjoy reading the book. This book’s grade level is probably 3rd grade and up and there are 158 pages. The chapters switch from Taryn’s point of view to Jeff’s point of view, which is really interesting in a good way. This is the Candy Apple Book series so if you are interested in other books like this just go to a library or to a book store and get other Candy Apple Books. This was a GOOD book!

  1. I also read the book, The Boy Next Door. I definitely agree with you about…most of the whole entire blog!!! Except for the fact that Taryn started to only hang out with girls and Jeff only hung out with the “cool-crew.”(aka soccer team)

The Boy Next Door is about the relationship between two GREAT friends- Taryn and Jeff. They have lived next door almost ever since they were born and have ALWAYS hung out since. They share great adventures and great times just… socializing at their porches. Except until… they hit middle school. EVERYTHING starts to change since junior high is just around the corner. First of all, Taryn starts to be rude to Jeff when he is hanging around his guy friends, when Jeff is being rude to Taryn when she is hanging around her girl friends. After a couple weeks in school, Taryn has gotten glasses… and HATES them!!! What makes it even more worse is that Jeff insults her by calling Taryn, “four-eyes.” Now, this is when Taryn ends the mean name calling and teasing, by ending their friendship!!! Will Taryn and Jeff EVER be friends again??? To find out read the book, The Boy Next Door.

Claire, you did a great job doing a blog on this book. I agree with you so much. I loved the carnival part, too!!! Keep up the great work!!! 🙂

  2. I also read the book The Boy Next Door by: Laura Dower. This book is realistic fiction, 4 points, and 159 pages and a great book. The main characters are Taryn and Jeff. This book is mainly these two AWESOME friends who have a good relationship of being friends, they have just about lived next to eachother since they were baby’s! I like this book because people can learn how relationships work among being friends for a long time. I like the part at the end but I shouldn’t give that away! I didn’t like the part were Taryn got glasses even though she hated them. I felt bad for her because she was getting called names, even by her best friend Jeff, Jeff was calling her “four eyes” Later on in the book Taryn and Jeff broke apart from being friends! Will they get back together? To find out you have to read the book The Boy Next Door by: Laura Dower. This book si mostly for girls because there is make-up and crushes and stuff like that this book was really nice but didn’t have enough action. I really enjoyed this book and hope you do to!
