No Talking – by Andrew Clements

This book is about a young boy named Dave Packer and his enemy Lynsey. Dave was in the middle of his fourth hour of no talking in class. He was staying quiet for the WHOLE day. Yeah, that’s right I said no talking for a WHOLE day in school. It was the end of his class so, he went to lunch, and he was still not talking. He was not talking because he was doing a report on India and he found out that one the greatest leaders of India, Mahatma Gandhi, did not talk for a whole day for one day in the week. Mahatma Gandhi inspired Dave to do the same. So that his how he got into a HUGE mess. When he walked into the cafeteria it was the loudest thing you ever heard in your life. Dave was use to it. He was just sitting in the cafeteria and eating, not talking, but listening too. When he was listening to his friend’s conversation he couldn’t help over hearing Lynsey’s conversation that was at the next table. Lynsey was talking about a girl and her sweater. They talked and talked. Dave was so annoyed so he got up and he said,” IF YOU HAD TO SHUTUP FOR 5 MUNUTES, I BET THE WHOLE TOP OF YOUR HEAD WILL EXPLODE!!!!!” Dave made a bad mistake saying these words because, one, he broke the rule about Mahatma Gandhi and ,two, Lynsey was as mad as a monkey getting his banana stolen. Back to the story, Lynsey threw her sandwich and said,”Oh, like there’s something wrong with talking? You never have any trouble with yourself blabbering and blabbering every day. We’ve all heard you.” After that Dave and Lynsey started bickering at each other until they decided that the best was to settle this is to have a contest. The contest was to see who can not talk for 2 days, but can say a 3 word sentence, maximum and it was also boys against girls. If you want to know who wins in the contest and if every 5th grade student gets in trouble read this fantastic book, No Talking, by Andrew Clements. I think this book will appeal to boys and girls, ages 8 – 13. This book can also appeal to adults, but not as much as kids will like it. This book does not have a hard vocabulary at all. I thought this book was fantastic because it was funny and I liked the whole concept about not talking. I also thought this author was very creative with this idea and I would like to try this sometime because it sounds fun. I loved this book and I know you will to.

  1. I really enjoyed reading No talking because it’s a kind of book where you are wondering what is going to happen next. I thought that some of the expieriences people went through while not talking were awkward. At first I thought the contest that Dave started was only going to be between Dave and Lynsey,so I was surprised that the whole class joined in. I did not put the book down when I read that Lynsey and Dave agreed that the winner would write a big L on the loser’s forhead.
