Rules-Cynthia Lord

Twelve year old Catherine just wants a normal life, but that’s impossible because her little brother, David, has autism. For years, she’s been trying to get David to become a normal little brother by making a bunch of rules for him like, “a peach is not a funny-looking apple,” and “keep your pants on in public.” Even though Catherine loves David, she’s also very embarrassed and frustrated by him. When a girl moves next door during the summer, Catherine hopes to be friends, but worries that David will ruin the relationship. Plus, she starts a growing friendship with a boy named Jason who moves around in a wheelchair, and can’t talk so he has to use cards with pictures on them to communicate with other people. This makes things even more complicated. In this story, you’ll see what it’s like to try to maintain a normal life while having a little brother with autism. I really loved reading this! It’s filled with humor and warmth, and I really recommend it.
