Island of the Blue Dolphins-Scott O'dell

The Island of the Blue Dolphins is a book about native girl named Karana who lives on the island which is located in the middle of the Pacific. One day Russian hunters come to the island for permission to hunt seal and camp on the island. Karana’s father, the chief, agree to let them stay, but as months pass the hunters and Karana’s people start to have skirmishes. When the hunters prepare to leave, Karana’s father and the captain of the hunters argue about the payment of the seals and then a major battle had started. After fierce battling and brave people fought, Karana’s father was killed with many of the warriors of the island. After voting a new chief Kimki, life isn’t the same in the village. Kimki decides that they should move to a new island so he set off to find a new island. As spring came, the people lost hope of Kimki’s return, but one day people from another island come to bring Karana’s people to their island. Karana’s people left the island, but Karana and her brother Ramo, were behind on the island. Will a ship ever arrive to bring Karana and Ramo to the island?   1. Catlinh, I really loved this book and your description helped me decide to read it. I am not going to give anything away, but I think you should have mentioned that this is really a survival story because she is left all alone to survive. I also especially liked the friendship that was formed between Karana and Rontu. It was very touching and made me a bit sad. I think that this book also taught me a lot about survival because I learned, through Karana, how to create a shelter, hunt, cook food and ward off wild dogs. To me, this is a book that would appeal to both boys and girls because it is so exciting.
