Where the Red Fern Grows – Wilson Rawls

During Billy’s older years he had a flash back of his childhood memories and piece by piece the story unfolded. When Billy was young he really wanted coon hounds. Billy picked berries, sold worms, and dozens of other chores for an entire two years to only earn fifty dollars. When he went to pick up his dogs at the depot after he ordered them, he named the girl Little Ann and the boy Big Dan. When they went on their first hunt they caught a coon. They hunted further away from home night after night. Every week or so, he went to his grandfather’s shop to sell the coon skins. When his dogs were one of the city’s greatest hunters, Billy’s grandfather signed him up for a hunting competition. When it was Billy’s night to hunt a blizzard roared over the sky. Billy lost his dogs and his grandfather tripped and hurt his ankle. Billy’s father’s prediction is that the blizzard will last untill morning.
