Tally is about to turn sixteen and she can hardly wait, not because of sweet sixteen but because that is when she turns pretty. You see in Tally’s world when you turn sixteen you go through an operation that makes you pretty. But, when Tally’s friend Shay runs away to a place called Smoke before the operation, a secrect goverment organization called Special Circumstances comes. They tell her that either she helps them find Shay and her friends or to not take the operation. But, when Tally arrives at Smoke she finds it hard to leave. I think that girls would like this book better than boys.

I think I might have to read that book! It sounds good! Thank you for the review, Melissa. I love how she thinks she is going to be “pretty”! I think this is the only book I am going to like. I dislike reading and books. I only read Anime, but this book seems good! Thanks for thee suggestion.
I really liked this book, but Melissa left out some details. Let me write my version of the story.
In this book by Scott Westfield, Tally Youngblood, a girl who is about to turn sixteen, can’t wait for her birthday. But not for her driver’s license: she is turning pretty. In the world Tally lives in, when you turn sixteen, you are put through a operation that turns you from ugly to pretty, and puts you in an awesome city where you can do whatever you want. Tally can’t wait.
But when Tally meets Shay, her mind is taken off the operation, and she and Shay have a great time hoverboarding and playing ugly tricks. But Shay isn’t sure she wants to be pretty. She would rather go to a secret place called the Smoke, which is an exciting city with only uglies. When Shay runs away, Tally is taken to Special Circumstances, where they tell her that Shay needs to be found, and Tally has to do it. Tally has to make a very hard choice: find Shay and bring her back to the city to become pretty, or forfeit her operation and never become pretty. So Tally decides that she is going to find Shay.
On the way, Tally faces many obstacles: Falling off her hoverboard, bathing in the ice-cold river, having to eat the same thing every day, and running through forest fires. When she finally reaches the Smoke, she manages to steal Shay’s boyfriend, arouse suspicion, and disturb the Boss. But after all this, Tally isn’t sure she wants to reveal the Smoke and turn pretty. Will Tally ever turn her friend in and turn pretty? Will she survive the smoke? Whatever choice she makes will change her life forever.

I read this book and I loved it. Tally was a great person going after her friend like that. Shay was great also, but I think she made a mistake by running away even if she was following what she believed in. She could have got in alot of trouble.
