Brian's Winter – By Gary Paulsen

What if thirteen year old Brian Robeson didn’t get rescued in the book Hatchet? This is the book about Brian’s winter in the Canadian woods. After he got the supplies from the crashed plane, he finished all the food and the rifle broke so he had to go back to using the bow and arrow to hunt for food. One day, he was awakened by a clanging sound. A bear was in his shelter and Brian kicked the bear. The bear turned around and swiped Brian to the edge of the icy water. The bear went into the water and found Brian’s fish trap. The bear ate the food there and went away. Brian decided he needed a stronger weapon. He made a bow and arrowheads out of the rock.

Later, Brian found a dead deer eaten by wolves. Brian took the rest of the deer to his shelter. As he cooked his food, a skunk walked four feet in front of him and raised its tail. Brian froze and the skunk just stood there with its tail up. Brian slowly got a piece of meat and tossed it to the skunk. The skunk took the piece of meat and walked away. The next day, Brian looked outside and saw the skunk wasn’t there. As Brian cooked the meat, the skunk waddled to Brian’s shelter and raised its tail. Brian threw some food from the pot and the skunk took it.

One day, a bear came and tried to get food from Brian. The skunk came just in time and sprayed to bear directly in the eye. The next day, Brian went hunting and saw a moose. He shot the moose in the chest. The moose came charging at Brian. Would Brian survive? Would he kill the moose? If he survives in the cold weather, how is he ever going to get home? Read Brian’s Winter to find out. I think both boys and girls would like this book about survival.
