The story started when Brian Robeson was at his house when the door bell rang. A guy named Derek Holtzer was at the door and he said he wanted Brian to go in the wilderness with him and live there just like he did in the Canadian Woods so he could teach people how to survive if they ever fall in a bad situation. Brian’s mom agreed and Derek came back a few weeks later with a plane. When they took off and landed. While they were unpacking, Brian said to leave all of the equipment on the plane except Derek’s radio, a map, and his note book. After the plane left, Brian made a shelter and then it started to rain. A few days later they had a big lightning storm. Derek reached for his radio and a lightning bolt struck Derek and the radio the next morning Derek had his eyes a little bit opened and Brian knew that Derek was in a coma. Brian tried to get some water but Derek choked on the water. Brian thought that Derek might die without food or water. Brian looked on the map and saw a river that connects to a trading post one hundred miles away. He decided to build a raft to reach the trading post and finds out what trouble is ahead of him. Will he survive and how is he going to get Derek to the trading post? If you want to find out, read The River by Gary Paulson. I think this book is good for people that find Hatchet intrusting. If you haven’t read Hatchet read Hatchet before The River.
