Because of Winn-Dixie – Kate DiCamillo

Loving, funny, creative, and smart describes the main character, Winn-Dixie. Winn-Dixie is a talented dog who can understand people and smile with his teeth showing. Opal, Winn-Dixie’s owner, adopts him at the Winn-Dixie market. Opal is new in Florida, so she tries to make new friends. She meets Miss Franny, a librarian, Gloria Dump; an old lady that people think is a ghost, Amanda, a friend, Otis, a worker at a pet shop, and the Dewberry boys. Opal doesn’t really prefer them. Anyway, Opal plans a party and invites Amanda, her daddy, the Dewberry boys (Gloria Dump said she had to), Ms. Franny, Gloria Dump, and Otis. Well, everybody made it. Everyone was happy until it started to rain and thunder and lighting was approaching. Winn-Dixie has a pathological fear of thunderstorms, so that’s a problem. Everybody forgot about Winn-Dixie. Nobody could find him! Anyway, I would recommend this book for both boys and girls and it is a fast read. If you want to find out what happens to Winn-Dixie, read Because of Winn-Dixie.

  1. This is my favorite book ever. It has a great storyline, and I love the characters. Winn-dixie is a cute dog from what I have imagined. I absolutely love how you described Winn-dixie because that is exactly as he is.

  2. Nice summary! I read this book and I loved it, and it sounds like you love it. I read it last year. I was reading it during class and at home. I was really into it. My favorite part was in the beginning when the dog made the mess and started licking the owner. Well, I had fun reading the book, and I also enjoyed your summary.

  3. It is important to note that there was a movie adaptation (2005)… complete trash. Save yourself 100 minutes and don’t watch it.
