Writing. Along with reading, it’s one subject that can cross the lines between all other subjects.

In broad terms there are three big genres of writing: explanatory, argument/opinion, and narrative.

Explanatory writing does just what it says: it explains something. This is the type of writing you produce to show what you know about a topic. Explaining how to prepare for a road trip or how to find a greatest common factor are examples of explanatory writing.

Argument/opinion writing is persuasive. You might “explain” facts or summarize information to educate your audience, but your primary mission is to get the reader to think or act the way YOU want.

Narrative writing tells a story from beginning to middle to end or explains a significant, single event. You might tell the story of your worst day at school or you might share a story about the moment you got your first pet.

The drop-down pages will share strategies for writing and protocols (a series of steps) to refine your writing. This is a work in progress, so if there is something missing that doesn’t address a need or question you have, say something in the comments.
