I started to take photo freshmen year because I just liked to take pictures and wanted to improve my picture taking skills. Since then, I learned a few things about myself. I learned that I really enjoy using double exposure and macro. The final project made me realize that I also like to take black and white pictures. Eventually, I would like to persue a career in journalism and in photojournalism.

I make my decisions while working based on how the picture looks. If I don’t like how something is turning out, I figure out a way to fix it whether that means taking a new picture or using different photoshop tools. Before I take a picture, I always have an idea of what I want the picture to look like and how I would photoshop it. Most of the time, these ideas come from pictures I’ve seen before and liked how they made it.

I want to start incorporating more photoshop tools in my pictures. Sometimes, I feel like some of my pictures are lame and need something to add some pazazz. I am also really looking forward to Photo 3 next year and using bokah.

About Kristin:

Kristin studied Art and Interior Design at Illinois State. She received a bachelor degree in Fine Arts from Columbia College. Before photgraphy, Kristin experimented with functional art such as crafting and using different materials and medias. Once back into photgraphy, she decided to make nature more interesting. The mirroring makes a kaleidoscope like appeareance in her pictures of nature.

For my photo essay I decided to follow my dog, Hershey, around. I decided to follow my dog around because she is a character, and because it would be easy to take pictures of her since I live with her. The first picture of Hershey is just her being photogenic. Hershey is six years old and was a rescue dog. We got her when she was just ten months old. When we first got her, she was very skiddish and afraid. She was very skinny and did not like me very much. Today, she is very friendly, very spunky, however she still does not like men in hats for some reason.  Hershey loves to take pictures. Hershey also loves to go on walks. I can say “walk” and Hershey will go running around the house like a crazed dog. The second picture I took on our daily walks to the mailbox. The bush in the picture she smells everyday. It is so hard to get her away from that bush. I have to use everything I have to get her to walk away from it. The third picture of Hershey is her sleeping. I had so many different pictures of Hershey sleeping, but this picture best describes her sleeping habitat. Hershey takes naps every hour of the day. She likes to nap anywhere and everywhere. This picture of Hershey takes place in my room next to my bed. Hershey is sleeping on her doggy bed, leaning on my bed. I can put that bed anywhere and Hershey will sleep on it. Without the bed, Hershey acts like a lost dog and doesnn’t know where to sleep. The fourth picture is of Hershey playing. In this picture, Hershey took the ball and threw it up in the air, signaling she wanted to play. Hershey is a lazy dog, however, and does not play very long. She is a lazy dog, once she gets tired, she stops and lays down. The next picture is of Hershey resting in the shade looking into the pool with fascination. Just before this picture was taken, Hershey jumped into the pool and went for a little swim. It took Hershey forever to learn how to get into the pool, often times she was too scared to go in. Now, Hershey just jumps in any chance she gets. The last picture of Hershey is her laying on me. Hershey likes to lay on her victims so they will be forced to continue petting her.

• Write about your project proposal: How are you going to shoot this project? What are you going to take pictures of? When? Where? What ideas do you have?

My photographer is Clyde Butcher. Clyde takes pictures in only black and white. Most of his pictures consist of nature and natural habitat of things. I noticed in a lot of his pictures there are clouds that are the main focal point or there would be a body of water reflecting something. His pictures use interesting angles and also collaberate in some macro.

I want to use the black and white photography to capture things you see everyday, for example taking an ant’s eye picture of that bumpy road you always drive over and that big old tree in your neighborhood. I also really want to take a picture of a sunrise and sunset. Like Clyde, I want to capture things in their natural habitat, however I can’t go travel to a forrest and start taking pictures of all the exotic plants and animals I see, so I’ll just stick with my habitat at home.

So for my self portrait, I had a different idea of what I wanted to do and what I actually did. I like what the finished product looks like much better than my original ideas I had. I wanted to do a silouette like type picture. So for this I made a multiplicity like picture and made two copies of myself. I lowered the opacity of the copies and used double exposure to fill in the copies with things I like. For example, there are all my favorite sports teams and foods. Recently, all my favorite shows aren’t on tv anymore or they just got boring so I have been watching sports a lot lately. I put my hockey player boyfriends, my football player boyfriend, and my singer husband all in the portrait because I just love ’em so much. Heehee. Okay, ’tis all.
