Organization is Key!

One of the things I want to instill in the students is that organization can be very, very important.  For any of us who have worked with LEGOs before, we know how messy and unorganized they can be.  It is much easier to do your work when every piece has a place.  I found these tackle boxes, yes for fishing, to organize all the pieces.  These will also be great to carry around to competitions!  If you’d like to help support our organization, head over to our DONATE page to see how you can help!

11-21-13 Let the Programming Begin!

Students started programming their robots today.  We set up a “track” on a table for the students to study and try to get their robot to follow.  They quickly learned that they weren’t going to get it the first time, the second time, the third time, etc.  I took some tweeking each time to figure out how to get the robot to follow the path.  I was very impressed with their perserverience!  We will continue to work with the “track” when we get back from Thanksgiving break.

LEGO Competition

Over the weekend, I attended a local FLL competition.  There were many schools from Elk Grove and surrounding area.  It was great to see what our club will be working towards in the near future.  I have every confidence that our students will excell in the challenges next year.  Below are some pictures I took to give you an idea of what it’s like.

11-19-13 Programming 101

Today, the students finished up their robots and I began teaching them how to program the robots.  There are some great videos to watch below:

EV3 Programming Tutorial

We learned that you sometimes need to adjust your programming ever so slightly in order for the robot to do exactly what you want.

11-14-13 Let’s Build!

Today, our students started building their first robot.  We split into groups and the students were instructed to work together as a TEAM to build the robots.  I was pleasantly surprised at how they worked together and made sure everyone had an opportunity to work on the robot.  As the coach, I want the teams to try to work problems out themselves before I intervene.

11-12-13 The Start of Something Exciting!

Our school has started an after school LEGO Robotics club!  GATE students in grades 4-6 were asked to participate in this exciting opportunity.  We have received 4 total LEGO Mindstorm robots through generous donations and are looking to add a few more.

Our first day involved writing thank you letters to our donors, talking about the FLL Core Values, thinking of a club name, and organizing all our LEGO pieces.

I look forward to what’s ahead and all the great things the students will be creating!
