CTEIG Update

We are winding down our initial 3-year CTE Incentive Grant (CTEIG). This round of funding must be completely spent by June 30th 2019.  For that reason all large purchases will be allocated by February 2019. Please contact John Pellman if you have questions about CTEIG purchases. Fortunately, the California State Legislature and Governor have extended CTEIG to be a permanent part of the state budget!  As soon as we have more information about the new funding formula, we will share those details with you.

K-14 Strong Workforce Initiative Grant

Through legislation signed into law in summer 2018, the state community college system’s Strong Workforce Initiative (SWI) has been expanded into a K-14 education, economic, and workforce development program. The purpose of SWI is to provide funding to create, support or expand high quality, industry-valued career technical education and workforce development pathways that are aligned with local labor market needs. A key performance measure for K-14 SWI projects will be increasing student transitions from K-12 to post-secondary education and a career.

The state allocated $150 million in ongoing funds for the K-14 SWI. Funds will be allocated to seven regional community college consortia based on a formula that includes three regional factors: unemployment rate, ADA for pupils in grades 7-12 and proportion of state job openings. Each consortium then will form a K-12 selection committee comprised of individuals with expertise in K-12 CTE and workforce development, including K-12 teachers, counselors and administrators; industry representatives; and at least one community college faculty or administrator.

The timeline for the K-14 SWI grant application process includes the following key dates:

  •         October 17, 2018: Release of a letter of intent to apply to local education agencies
  •         October 17-January 7, 2019: Regional information sessions
  •         December 12, 2018: Letter of intent to apply due
  •         January 7, 2019: Release of applications to local education agencies
  •         January 7, 2019: Establishment of K-12 Selection Committees
  •         March 15, 2019: Applications due
  •         April 30, 2019: Grant awards announced
  •         July 1, 2019: Funding released
