On Friday, May 4, students from Franklin High School’s School of Technology, Engineering, and Media (STEM) and the Green Renewable Energy Engineering Network (GREEN) Academy participated in the 9th annual SMUD Solar Car Race at American River College.
Over 200 high school students participated the preliminary rounds and 150 continued on to Friday’s competition. In addition to the race, additional awards were given for sustainability, engineering, and judges’ choice.
In the speed category, Franklin High School students won all three awards.
First Place: Adrian Nguyen
Second Place: Gurneel Boparai
Third Place: Zacharay Stock
Engineering Award: Adrian Nguyen for modifying the angle of his solar panel to match the angle of the sun.
Design Award: Andrew Bilan for his creative take on an airplane inspired solar car.
