  2.     “Bill Pickett Rodeo Ridin’ Cowboy” taks place in the late 1800s and early 1900s of Taylor Texas. Bill Pickett grew up as a feisty, fast, and curious. He wondered around looking at the cowboys drive their cattle and drempt of one day doing the same. His father, Thomas Jefferson Pickett, was born into slavery. The Civil War freed all the slaves so his father was able to marry, have 13 children, and buy a small piece of land.
Their second born child was Willie M. Pickett but they called him Bill. As a young boy, his cousins told stories of being cowboys when they visited. On those nights he would dream of roping cattle and helping strays. He imagined being older and becoming a cowboy.
One day, while he was walking home from school, he saw a dog bite the lower lip of a cow and bring it to the floor. He thought that if a dog could it, he could do it. A few cowboys were having trouble branding their cow. Bill helped them by bulldogging for the first time resulting in success.
At fifteen he left his family and found work as a cowhand. That’s where he learned to lasoo and ride like a cowboy. Bill went home when work was slow to see his family. Soon Bill started to perform and put on shows. Some rodeos turned him down but newspapers didn’t care. Bill married Maggy Terner and had nine kids. When he was home he would tell Maggy and the kids of being the “Dusky Demon” and how he was nicknamed that becuse of the dust left behind him when he bulldogged. Later, he joined a big, famous show called the 101 Ranch Wild West show where his family was able to live as he traveled.
A little later on, Bill started performing all around the world from New York to Mexico City to Canada to South America. He even performed in England for a King and Queen. He helped make the rodeo one the best loved sports for his time. Bill went back to live with his family and work closer to home. Bill died in 1932.
In conclusion, Bill Pickett went from a country boy in Tayler, Texas to a famous bulldogging cowboy that traveled aroud the world performing to support his family. Bill made his childhood dreams a reality and definetly lived life to the fullest. I learned that no dream or goal is impossible to achieve.

Bill Pickett was the feistiest boy. He was curious, quick as a jackrabbit, and wide-eyed than a hooty owl. He would always wonder off to watch the cattle drivers tramp along the Chisholm Trail. When Bill’s cousins came to visit they told them stories and how it was out there, being a cowboy. Bill always dreamed of being a cowboy. Bill watched how a bulldog bit down on a cow’s lower lip to calm it down. Billl ran into some cowboys’ that tried to calm a cow down. He showed them and they were impressed. One man put fourth a challenge to Bill. He bit the cow’s lower lip while the cowboy’s pressed their brand on it.
Bill found work on ranches. He saddled horses, mucking stalls, & watched hen houses at night. He learned how to lasso and ride like a real cowboy. He practiced bulldogging by catching steers. Bill’s fearless ridin’ spreaded from ranch to ranch. On Sundays people came to watch Bill snatch a steer. People droped money in his hat to admire his skill. Williamson County Live Stock Assaciation brought a fair and Bill was determined to compete. It was the first time Bill performed in a large crowd. Bill’s bulldogging went from Texas to Arkansas to Oklhoma to Kansas to Colorado and up through the hills of Wyoming. Now, every one wanted to see Bill’s special stunt.
Two years later, Bill married Maggie Turner. Bill & Maggie had 9 kids. Maggie and the young’uns sometimes came to watch Bill perform. He stopped ranch work for rodeos. Some of the rodeos turned Bill away because they believed that black cowboys should ride with their own kind. The newspapper didn’t care if he was white or black, his billdoggin’ was NEWS! The Miller brothers gave Bill an offer to perform in their ranch. Bill didn’t think twice. That offer was the best offer he ever got. Maggie and the young’uns lived on the 101 ranch. He became the 101 ranch’s star. When he got home, Bill would sit his family down and tell them stories. Bill’s nickname was the “Dusky Demon” because when he performed a dust of dirt was always behind him. He performed at the Texas Fort. The 101 ranch performed in different countries because of Bill. The Millers’ show was famous. Bill was just the cowboy they needed. He started to perform every where like: New York; Mexico; Canada; South America; and England. After years passed Bill gave up traveling to do his bulldoggin’ a rest. He returned to the 101 ranch where his family was. He only bulldogged at rodeos close to the ranch.
At the end of the story Bill Pickett died as a delighted man. First, he was not a famous person, but he became famous by his bulldoggin’. He worked really hard to help and support his family. The lesson I could learn from Bill Pickett is that never give up and always work hard in life.
