E6 News Tidbits for August 21 – 25

Dear Parents,

Students are working hard and doing very well in my class this far!  I am very proud of them!
There are some big events this week!  Please see important dates below:

Monday,  August 21st – Solar Eclipse!  What a historic day!!  We spent time watching the live stream in our classroom and completing a small assignment.

Thursday, August 25th – Annual Castello Fun Run!  Parents are invited to come and cheer on their children.  Third grade runs at 8:20.

Here is a look at what we are doing academically in class this week:

Math – We have been training for our guided math groups.  We are practicing routines and expectations for the various stations students will engage in during our math instruction.  There will be four groups.  Each group will meet with me for instruction every day.  Our first lessons will be about place value and rounding.

Reading – We are continuing our author study of Kevin Henkes books.  We have discussed characters, setting, problem, and solution (plot).  This week we will be learning character traits, visualizing and beginning, middle, end.

Writing – Students will be writing a short note to an assigned classmate.  They will be using the friendly letter format to write this.  They will each be writing their own address on a mailing envelope and the school’s address as the return address.  These notes will actually be mailed so each student will be receiving one!
Students will also be completing a compare and contrast paragraph about themselves and a friend of their choosing.

Social Studies – We are continuing our study of our location in the world.  We will be learning about our continent, country, state, city and community as well as what a border is.

Science – Solar Eclipse!!

Computers begin on Thursday this week.  Library is TBD.  PE is on Tuesdays, Thursdays and usually Mondays.
