Herman Leimbach students in grades 2-6 spent Friday morning with Intel’s Tony Oliver (Global Marketing and Communications (GMC) Division) learning important tips about digital safety.

Principal Abelardo Cordova kicked off the assembly by connecting Leimbach’s Student Standards: Be Safe, Be Respectful, Be Responsible to the digital world.

Thanks to Leimbach Computer Resource Teacher, Erica Swift and the Leimbach Newscast Team, both assemblies (Grades 2-3 and Grades 4-6) were captured on film and the edited version will soon be available on the school website.

Tony led the primary grades through a shared reading of Faux Paw the Techno Cat — ikeepsafe’s cartoon for students to learn what potential dangerous situations could look like and how to respond to them, an essential lesson for today’s digital students.

The upper grade students watched and discussed very true-to-life scenarios with three kids sharing lessons they had personally learned from their own online mistakes.

  • Do not share passwords with anyone but your parents/guardians
  • Do not share personal information
  • Do not download files from peer-to-peer websites or from unknown sources

The overall message for both groups was to Stop. Think. (and if the online situation seems safe), Connect.

Intel provided Leimbach teachers with certificates and pencils to send students home with to encourage online safety conversations with parents, guardians and siblings.

An important question on the topic of digital citizenship was directed to Gail Desler, EGUSD Technology Integration Specialist/Digital Citizenship Coordinator, by a Newscast Team reporter.

The morning ended with the same reporter interviewing Tony for an upcoming Leimbach newscast. We will be back to share the news show once it’s online. A special thanks to Erica for coordinating the event and continuing to weave digital citizenship into Leimbach’s curriculum across the school day.
