“Verity”, a British spy in Nazi-occupied Ormaie, France, finds herself captured by the Gestapo. The Nazi interrogaters give her a choice to give them information or visit the guillotine.  Verity chooses the first option and in writing to reveal her secret mission, she weaves a story of her friendship with Maddie.  Maddie, the pilot, who flew Verity to France.  Maddie whose piloting skills kept the plane from crashing after the tailplane was hit from gun fire from the ground.  Maddie who was able to get Verity to Ormaie and keep the plane steady while Verity parchuted to the secret location. Verity, like Scheherazade, gives the Nazis a wonderful tale in the details of her secret mission which prolong her life.  But will her tale be enough to insure her survival?

 

Inside Out and Back Again by Thanhha Lai

Inside Out & Back AgainWritten in the prose style of authors like Karen Hesse and Sonya Sones, Thanhha Lai weaves the story of a family’s life and journey from Vietnam to Alabama after the fall of Saigon. Ha along with her mother and three older brothers live in Saigon in 1975. Their father is serving in the Navy and has been missing in action for nine years. Ten-year-old Ha’s mother does her best to keep her family together in the tough times after the United States pulls out of Vietnam and the communists of North Vietnam move closer to their city. The family decides to flee Vietnam on a navy ship when Saigon collapses and through Ha’s eyes we learn about life on the ship, in refugee camps and finally about adjusting to life in Alabama in 1976. If you found Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl interesting, then you would should find Inside Out and Back Again just as interesting for it deals with the strength and courage families find to survive in the chaotic times of war.

Tom fights off the blindman and loses him on the streets. There he meets Worms who gives him a ride in exchange for some help with a job and a small payment. Worms is a grave robber and he needs help stealing a body. A body that turns out to be a dead ringer for Tom. In a rush to escape being caught at the grave, Tom leaves his coat with the diamond in the pocket. Events in the story escalate with Tom getting accused of murder and continually getting mistaken for someone called “Smasher”. Who is Smasher and why won’t anyone believe his story? How will he get out of this mess?

keturahI just finished reading Keturah and Lord Death by Martine Leavitt.  If you like romance, you should enjoy this book.  Keturah Reeve, a peasant girl, wanders away from her loving village out into the forest following the legendary hart and soon she is lost.   After three days of wandering deeper into the forest, Keturah weak with fatigue and hunger realizes she is dying.  When Lord Death comes to claim her, Keturah uses her storytelling skills to gain another day.  She strikes a bargain with Lord Death that if she can find true love, he will have to let her go.  Lord Death returns her to the edge of the forest close to her grandmother’s cottage after Keturah promises to return the next night to finish her story and to be claimed by Lord Death.  Will Keturah find her true love in just a day?
