Our school-wide character development program focuses on the character traits of Responsibility, Respect, and Resilience. Each month, the school will emphasize one trait. At the beginning of the year, I will review, model, and practice with the students the behaviors related to these character traits that everyone is expected to demonstrate in each area of the school. As part of our school-wide program, we implement a reward system for students who demonstrate positive traits with “Spartan Shield” tickets. In my classroom, I assign team points, literacy awards, and a class marble jar for special class rewards or privileges.
Below are the school-wide character traits and expected behaviors students should demonstrate:
Responsibility
- I will come to class on time and ready to work.
- I will complete my homework.
- I will be accountable for my decisions.
- I will be honest and trustworthy.
Respect
- I will be polite.
- I will use good manners.
- I will listen while others speak.
- I will follow directions.
Resilience
- I will work to solve problems.
- I will challenge myself.
- I will persevere and be patient.
- I will do my best.
I believe that it is my responsibility to create an inclusive, safe, supportive, engaging environment for all of my students. I also believe that students need daily modeling and opportunities to practice showing respect, making good decisions, and solving problems so that they can take ownership of these essential traits. I know that for some students, some days can be more challenging than others for a variety of reasons. As their teacher, I am there to listen and to facilitate and to problem-solve together whenever necessary.
