Sunrise Elementary School Off-loading

For the 2013-14 school year, Sunrise Elementary will reach an important milestone that has been six years in the making. In 2007-08, we opened as a brand new school with approximately 480 students. As of today, we have 1,041 students registered for the 2013-14 school year. We have added three more teachers, completely occupying all available classroom space.

We are currently over-enrolled in kindergarten, third, and sixth grades. This means that the students enrolled over our capacity may be off-loaded to one of our neighboring schools with space. When off-loading is necessary, bus transportation is provided. Parents of incoming kindergarten students are aware of their enrollment status via our AM/PM assignment process.

Parents of students in third and sixth grades who did not attend Sunrise last year and are new registrants for the 13-14 school year are currently in off-load status. There are also four sixth grade students who began Sunrise in February 2013 as fifth graders who are may be off-loaded. The parents of these students have been contacted. Decisions regarding off-loading will not be made until August. Depending upon the numbers of students over-enrolled in a particular grade level, students could start the year at Sunrise and fill a vacancy left by a “no show” or be off-loaded to a neighboring school if no vacancy occurs. If there are significant numbers of students over-enrolled, a new class could be opened on another campus prior to or after the start of the school year. As the first day of school draws closer, more specific information will be available.

Katherine Albiani Middle School Redirection

On May 29, 2013, a press release was issued by EGUSD announcing that due to dramatic growth in east Elk Grove, as of June 3, 2013, all newly enrolling students who move into our (Sunrise) attendance area will not attend Albiani Middle School but will be redirected to Smedberg Middle School. Albiani Middle School has reached their enrollment capacity. Students from other Albiani feeder elementary schools are being redirected as well. The full text of the press release is available on the EGUSD website (Enrollment Redirection).

If your child attended Sunrise Elementary during the 2012-13 school year, the redirection plan will not affect your child’s enrollment and attendance at Albiani Middle School. Enrollment in the middle school for students currently enrolled as elementary students happens automatically through our school office. There is not a new registration packet and a new registration date. The transition between elementary and middle school is handled as a function of our school program. ONLY those students who initially register beginning June 3, 2013 and beyond, will be redirected to Smedberg Middle School.

Dear Kindergarten Parents:

A master list of our registered kindergarten students is now posted in the front office window. This list contains the AM (morning) or PM (afternoon) assignment for students with completed registrations who are assured a spot at Sunrise for the 2013-14 school year. Please come and check for your child’s assignment. There is also a letter containing important start of school information including the dates for Back-to-School Night and kindergarten visitation. Teacher assignments will be made at Back-to-School Night

If no AM or PM assignment is noted this means that either immunizations are incomplete or a student is currently in overload status. Students may not begin attending classes with incomplete immunizations. If your child has recently completed their required school immunizations, please bring proof of immunization to the office so that we may give you your AM/PM assignment.

Overload status means that a student’s enrollment occurred after Sunrise reached its enrollment capacity of 144 students. A student in overload status may be bused to a neighboring school with space. When busing occurs, this is called off-loading. Decisions regarding off-loading are dependent upon enrollments at Sunrise and our neighboring schools, Cosumnes River Elementary and Dillard Elementary. Due to the changes to enrollment that occur over the summer and as the school year begins, all decisions regarding off-loading are pending at this time. All registered kindergarten students will have a class assignment.

For clarification as to whether your child needs immunizations or is in overload status, please contact the school office. Our office hours are 8:00-3:00 daily through June 14th. We are closed daily from 11:30-12:30 for lunch. The phone number is 985-4350.

Sincerely,
Judy E. Hunt-Brown, Principal

Active parent involvement continues to be an important part of the success of Sunrise Elementary School. One of the ways that parents can be involved is to become a member of the School Site Council. We are currently in need of five parent members to serve on our council.

The School Site Council is a committee composed of ten members whose purpose is to advise the principal on issues relating to the improvement of school programs and services. The committee composition consists of an equal number of school staff (5) and parents (5). Each group elects their own representatives. Elected parent members serve a two year term on the council. The council meets once monthly. Meetings generally last about an hour.

The School Site Council plays an important role in the operation of a school. Members of the council need to be able to consider complex issues, understand the resources and structures under which a school must operate, work collaboratively with others, and be able to make recommendations for the overall good based on data.

The primary duty of the School Site Council is to assist in the development of the Single Plan for Student Achievement or Plan to Achieve Bold Goals. This plan is a requirement for all schools participating in programs funded through the consolidated application process to receive categorical state funding. The plan contains an analysis of the school’s strengths and weaknesses and outlines plans to improve areas of weakness. The development of the plan is a collaborative process that involves the entire teaching faculty and School Site Council under the direction of the principal.

If you are interested in serving as a member of the Sunrise School Site Council, please contact Mrs. Hunt-Brown at 985-4350. Once a slate of interested parents has been collected, an election by ballot will be held.

Council members Joshua Golka, Ann Grottveit, Craig Osborn, Mark Oliver, and Esther Romero; who have each completed a two year term of office, deserve a hearty thank-you and acknowledgement for their leadership, wisdom, and interest in furthering the growth and progress of our school. They have supported our school’s progress through some very tough economic times.

Mrs. Hunt-Brown
Principal
