Helping at Home

Reading:  Encourage your student to read quietly and out loud.  It is VERY important that students read for 30 minutes EVERY night.  Just like anything in life, the more they practice, the better they will get.  Check in with your student about what he/she is reading to make sure it is not too hard and that, most importantly, they are enjoying it!  Your nearest public library is Valley Hi-North Laguna Library .  When they finish a book they should take an AR quiz on this website:  https://hosted134.renlearn.com/287723/

Math:  MATH FACTS!  Fifth grade students should have their basic addition, subtraction, multiplication and division facts memorized.  If they don’t they can practice at www.aaamath.com. The most important tip I can give you in math is to look at your students homework – often students will just write random numbers down and say they are done.  You don’t always have to understand the concepts your students is learning to be able to tell if they are showing their work or not!   However, if you have more time and want to see what they are learning check out this FABULOUS website that is provided by our math program www.onlineintervention.com

Science:  Science is important too.  Check at this fascinating site that has videos, vocabulary puzzles, journals and much more. http://activities.macmillanmh.com/science/ca/grade5/index.html

Test prep:  To ease your child’s concerns about the CST test here is a wonderful site for practice. www.mytestbook.com.
