According to the California Department of Education, Service-learning is a method whereby participants learn and develop through active participation in thoughtfully organized service that:

  1. is conducted in and meets the needs of a community;
  2. is coordinated with an elementary school, secondary school, institution of higher education, or community service program, and with the community;

  3. helps foster civic responsibility;

  4. is integrated into and enhances the [core] academic curriculum of the students, or the educational components of the community service program in which the participants are enrolled; and

  5. provides structured time for the students or participants to reflect on the service experience.

Reflections are written responses by students that are critical components of the service learning experience.  During a reflection, students consider how their project is making a positive impact and meeting a need in the community. Reflection ideas can be found by going to the following link.
